There are over 60 species of hornbills worldwide, with eight species found in Borneo. Among them, the Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) is one of the largest and most iconic treasures of the local rainforest. This majestic bird can reach a length of 80 to 90 centimetres and can live up to 35 years in the wild. Its most distinctive feature is the large, golden-yellow, upcurved "casque" on top of its bill. This hollow structure, made of keratin, not only serves as a resonating chamber to produce loud calls but is also its signature characteristic.
In Borneo, the Rhinoceros Hornbill holds significant cultural status. For the indigenous Iban people, it is known as "Kenyalang" and revered as the "King of Birds", symbolizing war and courage. Its image frequently appears in traditional totems and ceremonial rituals. Due to its unique status, the hornbill is also the state bird of Sarawak, Malaysia.
Hornbills primarily feed on fruits (especially figs), supplemented by insects and small reptiles, making them important seed dispersers in the tropical rainforest. Their breeding method is unique: the female cooperates with the male to seal the tree cavity using mud and food residue, leaving only a small slit. She then incubates the eggs and raises the chicks inside, completely dependent on the male for food.
However, the survival of this rainforest giant is under severe threat. Due to large-scale deforestation of tropical rainforests leading to the loss of large nesting trees, combined with illegal hunting and the pet trade, the hornbill population is declining rapidly. It has been listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
