scrolling through 12 pieces of moments back in 12 months ago in town.

actions & sentiments intertwined — but without the photo archive, if you ask where I’ve been to last September, it would be a hard task… mainly because of my ability to recall memories has been declining since COVID (& ofc getting older each year)

anyway, as we are approaching the final few months of the year, September would always serve as a mini restart to me, not only because of the beginning of school term (which is irrelevant to me now), but also early September is my freelance anniversary since 2017… yes, time flies, & I know I still have a lot to improve & adapt.

and although the temperature in HK is still high in September, we can occasionally feel the autumn breeze at night if we’re lucky. daytime is getting shorter day by day, & sunrise/sunset colours are shifting to a more smoky & subdued palette… ghost festival vibes quickly turn into mid-autumn vibes etc… these are the impressions of Hong Kong’s September

Every year during the lunar month of July, there are Chinese rituals happening in different districts of Hong Kong. We call it the Yu Lan Festival (盂蘭節) — where temporary bamboo sheds (棚戲) pop up for a short week on neighborhood playgrounds, transforming concrete urban spaces into open, glowing arenas.

Among all the traditions, catching the ritual opera (Shengongxi 神功戲) is my absolute favourite. Sitting under the giant, temporary bamboo scaffolding structure — an architectural marvel built entirely without a single nail — is an experience like no other.

This year, same as last year at Carpenter Park (the former Kowloon Walled City), I was fascinated capturing both the “戲裡” (on-stage drama) and “戲外” (off-stage life) moments. On stage, performers in shimmering robes bring ancient myths to life. But step behind the curtain and you catch the raw, human side: actors eating raw fruits or scrolling on their phones in full heavy makeup and intricate headdresses.

It’s this surreal blur between the sacred and the everyday that makes this ritual so intriguing.

Have you been to any Yu Lan Festival rituals or events? Which part is your favourite?

Shamshuipo is the New Brooklyn”

New Brooklyn

Anyways,
“New Brooklyn”

that’s why continual visual documentation of the city is still quite important in this era.

late summer 3 x 3 petit courses
— Tsuen Wan Pier
— Aberdeen Street, Sheung Wan
— Hung Hom

officially trying my first roll of Lucky C400 film! as with the iso200 version, it’s not an easy film the shoot with.

if you got a chance to shoot it, expect magenta shadow cast along with cyan highlight plus bursting reds. I retuned the original scans with a touch of warmer tones but I hope the tinted casts could be improved for future batches 🙏🏼 overexposing the roll slightly to +1/3 or 2/3 could help a bit.

have you tried the Lucky C400?

Yuen Long — The Mixed Tape

Exploring the Hong Kong outskirt big town of Yuen Long on an ordinary day. No planned route, just making as many detours as possible to observe & feel the street vibes.

No exaggerated skylines.
No fabricated facades.
No touristy hotspots.
No historic monuments.
Just an open theatre of everyday secular life.

From wet markets to smelly arcades,
From pharmacy cats to random alleys,
From old 80s posters to flashy claw machines,
From light rail buzz to diverse haircut salons,
From pawn shops to random streetside cartons,
Everything seems chaotic but orderly.
Everything seems routine but ever-flexible.

Well, Yuen Long may not be the only HK district that possesses the above characteristics, but once you’ve turned on your exploration & observation radar, Yuen Long can really be a unique & fun playground to discover wonders from the mundane.
