Sebastião Salgado (1944 - 2025) is a Brazilian photographer widely regarded as one of the most important documentary photographers of the contemporary era.
Trained originally as an economist, he turned to photography in the early 1970s and later became a member of Magnum Photos before co-founding Amazonas Images.
Salgado is known for large-scale, long-term photographic projects exploring human labor, migration, social inequality, and the natural world. Among his most influential works are the projects Workers, Migrations, and Genesis, all photographed in powerful black and white with dramatic contrast and monumental composition.
His photographs combine documentary storytelling with an epic visual style, often highlighting the dignity and resilience of people facing difficult conditions.
Beyond photography, Salgado and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado created the Instituto Terra, a major reforestation and environmental restoration project in Brazil.
Sebastião Salgado’s work has been exhibited worldwide and published in numerous photobooks, establishing him as a central figure in modern documentary photography.
