The Grosbeak Starling (Scissirostrum dubium),
also known as the grosbeak myna, finch-billed myna, or scissor-billed starling, is a species of starling in the family Sturnidae.

It is endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia, where its natural habitat is tropical lowland, and sometimes subtropical montane, lightly wooded forest areas and wetlands. It is threatened in the wild by habitat loss, and by birds being captured for the cagebird trade.

Black Naped Oriole

(Oriolus chinensis)
The Black-naped Oriole is a striking passerine known for its bright yellow body, contrasting black eye stripe, and melodic whistling calls. Commonly found in open woodlands, city parks, and forest edges across Southeast Asia, it often stays high in the canopy, making it more heard than seen.
Interesting fact:

Despite its bright color, the Black-naped Oriole can be surprisingly hard to spot. Its yellow plumage blends well with sunlit leaves, a form of natural camouflage that helps it avoid predators while foraging for fruits, insects, and nectar.

🪶 The Patient Hunter — Juvenile Striated Heron.
this young Striated Heron is a stealthy little predator! 🐟 Known for its intelligence, the Striated Heron is one of the few birds in the world that uses bait — dropping insects or twigs on the water to lure unsuspecting fish closer. Nature’s clever fisherman at work! 🎣

Captured in Jakarta using Canon EOS R8 + RF 200–800mm

The Blue-tailed Bee-eater is one of Southeast Asia’s most striking aerial hunters. It specializes in catching flying insects—especially bees, wasps, and dragonflies. Before swallowing its prey, it typically tosses the insect in the air and positions it precisely, just like in this frame.

Quick Facts:
• Habitat: Open woodlands, wetlands, coastal areas, and grasslands.
• Behavior: Frequently seen perched on exposed branches, scanning for insects before launching into fast, agile flights.
• Diet: Mainly flying insects. They remove stings by hitting the prey against the perch.
• Role in the ecosystem: Natural controllers of insect populations, contributing to ecological balance.

This action shot shows its precision feeding behavior—a moment you only catch if you spend time watching their rhythm and timing.

Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker (Yungipicus moluccensis)

Small but mighty — the Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker is Southeast Asia’s tiniest woodpecker, often spotted clinging to slender branches or tree trunks in parks and mangroves. Measuring only about 12 cm, it taps lightly rather than hammering like its larger cousins, searching for insects hiding beneath the bark.

The Oriental Darter, often called the Snakebird, gets its name from its long, snake-like neck that glides gracefully above the water while the rest of its body stays submerged.
Unlike most water birds, darters don’t have waterproof feathers — which actually helps them dive deep and move swiftly underwater to hunt fish like this one! After a successful catch, they often resurface and toss their prey into the air before swallowing it whole.

Spotted and photographed at Taman Wisata Alam Angke Kapuk, Jakarta.
A perfect example of patience, precision, and wild beauty at work. 🌿✨

Oriental Magpie-Robin (Copsychus saularis)

The Oriental Magpie-Robin is a common but often overlooked resident bird across urban parks, gardens, and wooded areas in Jakarta. Males are easily recognized by their glossy black upperparts and bold white wing patches, while females are greyish with more subdued tones.

This species is known for its wide range of vocalizations. Males sing prominently from exposed perches, especially during early mornings, to mark territory and attract mates. They feed mainly on insects, small invertebrates, and occasionally fruits.

The Oriental Magpie-Robin is adaptable and thrives even in developed areas, making it one of the most frequently encountered songbirds in city environments like Bintaro.

The Olive-backed Sunbird is one of Southeast Asia’s most charming little nectar feeders. Despite their tiny size, these birds play a big role in pollination, helping many flowering plants reproduce.

🔍 Key Facts:
• Diet: Primarily nectar, but also small insects—especially when feeding their chicks.
• Behavior: They can hover like hummingbirds, but usually prefer to perch while feeding.
• S*x Differences: Males have a striking metallic-blue throat patch; females (like the one here) are yellow and olive throughout.
• Habitat: Very adaptable—found in gardens, parks, mangroves, and forests across Southeast Asia.
• Role in Nature: Important pollinators that help maintain healthy ecosystems.
