Photographing a wild male Lady Amherst's Pheasant (Chrysolophus amherstiae) has been a long-held aspiration. Despite being common in captivity worldwide, encountering one in the wild presents a much steeper challenge. The species is (naturally) restricted to parts of southern China and neighbouring Myanmar. To capture this image; we travelled in to a remote village in south Sichuan and visited a dedicated blind where these normally shy birds have become habituated.

Chickens have been a repeat feature on our ongoing China - Mega birding tour, and this male Silver Pheasant (Lophura nycthemera) was particularly impressive.

Indochinese Green Magpie (Cissa hypoleuca), is a real showstopper! This particular individual was so confiding (unusual for this species), that my only option was to go for a portrait shot.

Arctic Terns (Sterna paradisaea) should be on their southward migrations now, and they should reach South African shores in just a few weeks (if not already).

Also endemic to the island of Rodrigues, the unique Rodrigues Fody (Foudia flavicans) is one of the better-looking Indian Ocean island endemics. As for the endemic warbler, the species' population was reduced to just a few pairs due to the destruction of forests on the island of Rodrigues and linked to the passage of cyclones. However, today the birds are common in any forested habitat on this remote island and the hardest part of seeing this species is actually just getting to its island. The Rodrigues Fody has been a firm favourite of mine for a while now.

Endemic to the small Mascarene island of Rodrigues, the Rodrigues Warbler (Acrocephalus rodericanus) is certainly a bird that rarely features on Instagram. The species is now abundant across the island but was virtually wiped out by Cyclone Monique in 1968. A second cyclone in 1979 destroyed most of what remained of its habitat putting it in further peril but, thanks to intense restoration efforts, forests have now returned to the island and the species' population has recovered. Although the bird is lumped into Acrocephalus, it is incredibly unique in its behaviour and call.
