Cornfield Astronomical Observations

Cornfield Astronomical Observations Documenting my personal experience with astronomy and everything related.

First part of my Project Moonshine series. I'm basically filming as I work on my telescope and trying to make something interesting from that.

Unfortunately the sound quality is not the best, but it will have to do until I get a better microphone. Also, I'll be experimenting with different formats and approaches, so the videos will not be entirely consistent with each other.

Now that I've set the expectations... The first part is about cutting the PVC pipe that will eventually become the main telescope tube.

A couple days ago I received this thing in the post. I had no idea what it was since I was still expecting more packages. Based on the size of the box, I did suspect it's the telescope mirror.

And, indeed, it was :D

I was so excited I had to make an unboxing video.

I already started working on the telescope and there are other videos I'm working on, I'll post those later as well.

Days #2 and #3. Finishing the tube.

Wow, this was hard. I had to bring those four half pipes into a full pipe, so I had to stretch them a little bit. They are much stiffer than I imagined :))

I eventually had to use a car jack to hold the tube into position while inserting the screws. I've tried so many things before that and messed up the inside paint job a little bit, but I was planning to give it another coat anyway. So no biggie.

So far things are going well. The tube is nice and dark inside. The cross beams are to force it into shape while the tensions settle in the walls.

I'll make a video of the process soon :)

First workshop day. I couldn't find a 10 inch tube for the telescope (I need 10 to house the 200mm mirror, as 8 inch would barely be enough). The widest I could find were 6 inch PVC pipes, so I had to find a way to build a 10 inch tube out of them.

The plan is to cut the pipes in half pipes and then join four half pipes together and force them to become quarter pipes of a 10 inch tube. Hope it makes sense :)

Since I want to be able to open the tube for maintenance and upgrades anyway, I would have cut it regardless of gauge. So it's actually not much extra work on account of not finding the desired gauge. I just have to find a way to stretch the tubes to a 10 inch diameter :))

Unfortunately I ran out of black paint, so I'll have to continue the operation tomorrow.

This will hopefully become the highlight of my posts in the next weeks.

I've been using my Nikon Coolpix P900 camera to take pictures of the sky. Sadly the 83x zoom and small lens have soon proven to be not enough for my ambitions so I've decided to build my own telescope.

Why build it? I love to build stuff. It's a serious challenge and it involves a lot of stuff I've never done before. It's going to be awesome, hopefully.

First post on the page :)

The name of the page came as a joke from last year. Covid was keeping me home and my thoughts were keeping me up at night so I took my Coolpix P900 83x camera and started taking pictures of the Moon.

Naturally, I went to the cornfield nearby where it was nice and dark so I could take my pictures. Hence Cornfield Astronomical Observations.

I eventually turned my attention towards other objects on the sky. Since then I discovered many things and learned a lot.

I've decided to start this page to document my quest for knowledge and discovery in the cornfield next to where I live.
