I push and manoeuvre uncooperative feet into my hiking boots, tucking wide fitting jean bottoms into my socks.
"This will do the trick". Bertie may be a senior dog but I know he will put me through my paces and getting wet is inevitable.
Today Lough Mask is still and the sky stretches on for what seems like forever. It's humid and butterflies still hanging onto summer can be seen skirting amongst the purple and yellow wildflowers.
It's a simple game for Bertie, the human throws the stick and the hound retrieves the stick!
I am daydreaming when I 'bring myself back into the room' and see him standing still, something he rarely does despite his twenty years plus.
There's a look of knowing about him as he watches into the nothingness of our surroundings.
I am sure there is another world he knows of unseen to us mere mortals.
And in that moment I am reminded of childhood tales of Fionn Mc Cumhaill and his loyal hounds.
Perhaps Bertie looks like Scéolang, he certainly is a surviver and the most loyal of companion to his chosen human.
A creature part human and part hound. My head becomes filled with magic. Stories of fairies, warriors and huntsmen disappearing across the fields as if never there.
Bertie plus stick which no matter how many times he retrieves and still yet reluctant to give up, arrive back at my two drenched feet.
Daydreams are interrupted and he stands and waits.
"Let's do this forever Bertie" 🩷.

Randoms from Summer ⛱️.
There were long hot days of endless sunshine and blue skies.
Days when I was productive on a grand scale and days when I was no good for nothing or no-one!
High temperatures afforded me the perfect excuse to take on a slower pace.
Days I worked in the garden and days when I simply lay in it.
Evenings spent sitting in a garden chair as the sun began to lower.
With the scent of white roses filling my head.
Summer dresses with patterns of pinks, yellows and reds were worn to tea with friends.
Laughs, tears and honesty shared over cake...and more cake!
Looking back to shore at sunset as a salty sea rose above my knees and hips and swallowed me whole.
Days that brought pain, rescued by the joy of a dahlia in full bloom.
Thankful for a beautiful summer.
