White-Throated Kingfisher - Koh Samui, Thailand 🇹🇭

Kicking off my Thailand series with one of Koh Samui’s most colourful residents.

I encountered this bird in a tree overlooking a pond at the resort where I’m staying in Koh Samui. I was shocked by just how large it was compared to the Common Kingfisher we have in Ireland, roughly twice the size. Most noticeably, this kingfisher was not shy at all and allowed me to approach within a few feet.

The White-throated Kingfisher is classed as a tree kingfisher, meaning it doesn’t need to live near water. An opportunistic hunter, it will take almost anything it can catch, including insects, lizards, small birds and fish.

I’ve always thought European shags were a bit underrated. Most people probably don’t give them a second glance, but get close enough and you’ll find a pair of emerald green eyes that look like they belong on a tropical bird rather than an Irish seabird.

I’m currently in Thailand on my honeymoon and have already had some great wildlife encounters, so the next few posts will be a little different. Plenty of Thai wildlife coming soon.

Puffins in the Sea Pink.

Unsurprisingly, when you find puffins surrounded by such beautifully coloured flowers, you’re going to spend a bit of time photographing them in them.

Of course, every shot involved lying flat on my stomach in the middle of the flowers.

Gorgeous little puffin from an amazing trip to the Saltees yesterday.

I have so many photos yet to even select, let alone process. Last year I visited the Saltees during the middle of the day, which unfortunately meant dealing with very harsh light. Yesterday’s tour, organised by , ran until 10pm, allowing us to capture these beautiful birds in gorgeous soft evening light.

Loads more posts to come.

It was also fantastic to meet various other photographers from on here.

Some more fox cub entertainment 🦊

I’ve completely fallen in love with these little guys, they’re just ridiculously cute. Watching them slowly grow in confidence and explore the world around them has been such a privilege.

I’ve not been up to see them in over a week now, so I think it’s definitely time for another visit soon.

Beautiful little fox cub exploring its new world 🦊

What a privilege it has been to spend the past few weeks observing these wonderful little creatures, watching them grow and become braver every time I visit.

I genuinely do not take this discovery for granted. I feel so lucky to have moments like this right on my doorstep, and to be able to quietly watch these cubs experience the world for the very first time.

Is there anything more pure than watching a truly innocent little being discover the world for itself?

The common cuckoo is one of the most fascinating birds to visit Ireland each year.

After spending the winter in central and southern Africa, they return here every spring having travelled thousands of kilometres across Europe and the Sahara Desert.

What makes them so unique is the way they reproduce. Rather than building their own nests, female cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, leaving the unsuspecting parents to raise the chick as their own.

Even more remarkable is that young cuckoos later make the journey back to Africa entirely alone, guided only by instinct. They have never met their real parents, yet somehow still navigate across continents.

Beautiful fox cub 🦊

This is definitely one of the most satisfying photos I’ve ever taken. Sitting in a full ghillie suit hidden in a hedge, watching five fox cubs play in front of me, really doesn’t get much better than this.

At one point, one of the cubs wandered directly towards me. It could clearly tell there was a shape hidden in the hedge (me), but it didn’t quite understand what I was. It stood there watching me for a few moments, staying still just long enough for me to capture this image at 1/15s.

A moment I don’t think I’ll forget anytime soon. 🦊

The most adorable fox cub 🦊

This is by far one of the most satisfying shots I’ve ever taken.

I’d been observing a fox in a particular field close to my house several times since last year. Just last week, I decided to stake out in a hedge along the field in full camo in the hopes of seeing it again. To my absolute astonishment, after a short wait, five beautiful fox cubs emerged and started playing right in front of me.

A few evenings later, I returned to the same spot, this time setting up in a hedge to the side of the den. I’m amazed I was even able to pull off this shot as there was little to no light. This was taken at 1/15s.

Hopefully I can get a few more encounters over the coming weeks in better light 🦊
