A Woman's Work

A Woman's Work Photo project by Beta Bajgart about women at work. They have figured things out and they are seekers too. They are inspiring!

Women with great stories and strong voices, brilliant skills and superb business ideas, women who are the most amazing carers. A series of beautiful portraits of strong, inspirational women in interesting and unusual professions. Cutting to the heart of gender stereotypes and expectations of their place in the world, this collection of extraordinary women are role models in every sense.

Earlier this year we have created a short documentary about Dil Wickremasinghe. For various production reasons we were not able to share it. Anyway, my brain is somehow refusing to take into consideration that there was a half year between March and now. The time in which a lot of us got lost.
We're slowly returning back to work which will include continuation of this page and A Woman's Work project and I thought those pictures that we took right before the first lockdown will be nice way of a gentle and slow comeback.
Lovely faces of Dil, the DOP extraordinaire Waldeck, the legend that is the sound engineer Kennington and the best assistant we ever had Van de Waal.

Earlier this year I was commissioned to take pictures of women who are running marathon. I travelled all over Ireland to meet and photograph them and yet again I was inspired by their strength, energy and enthusiasm. They are local heroes, contributing to their communities, juggling work, motherhood or caring for relatives. They are giving up their time for others, organising groups to get out training, fundraising or creating awareness for causes that are special to them. They make real difference to us all. Good luck to them and to all those fabulous ladies running this Sunday Dubiln Women's Mini Marathon. Vhi Women's Mini Marathon 2019 Beta Bajgart Photographer

Work aside, this year was mad. Life happened in multitude. We had to move house and ended up buying our own place. Constantly moaning about the stress of it and not being grateful enough...
But we were able to afford our own place!! When I’m looking back at pictures I took recently, this one stands out now.
This beautiful lady, Alice Leahy, devoted her life to helping others, people without a home. I borrowed her quote from Catherine Cleary's book 'The Stars Are Our Only Warmth':
“Lots of things will be assumed if you live in a doorway, a tent or a hostel. You will be labeled a client, a customer, a service user, a number. If I’ve learned anything, it is not to make assumptions about anyone. Boxes are not for people. At least, not while they’re alive.”
The Alice Leahy Trust is a non-judgemental, befriending, social and health service for people who are homeless. Her memoir was published by The O'Brien Press.

"Fast and Faster" is the name of the documentary I made about the queen of irish motor sport Rosemary Smith. Screening this weekend at The Richard Harris International Film Festival in Limerick. This is the only production picture I have from the filming. Myself, Rosemary and the brilliant director of photography Jaro Waldeck at the end of the day. It was my first directing and producing work and I will never be grateful enough to Rosemary and the whole team for having a faith in me.
