FAQ: Does my baby need to be asleep for their newborn session?
Not for the whole session! 🤍
I absolutely love capturing those gorgeous wide-awake eyes, little expressions and all the personality that starts appearing even in those first few weeks.
But for my more posed newborn photographs, I do usually work with baby while they’re asleep and settled.
Those tiny curled-up poses require careful positioning, and a sleeping baby is generally much more relaxed and less likely to wriggle or move themselves out of position. It allows me to work slowly and safely while creating the photographs you see throughout my newborn portfolio.
That’s also why newborn sessions can take 2–3 hours. We’re never rushing baby to sleep or expecting them to perform on cue. There’s time for feeding, cuddles, winding, settling and sometimes simply waiting.
And if baby arrives wide awake?
We photograph those beautiful eyes first. 🥰 Then when sleep eventually wins — as it usually does! 😂 — we move into the sleepy, posed part of the session.
A newborn session isn’t about making your baby fit my schedule.
I build the session around theirs. 🤍
