Can you believe March is around the corner?!? Longer days, softer light, and the return of travel season in County Kerry🌅

Time to rediscover the landscapes, coastal drives, and timeless towns that make this region one of Ireland’s most sought-after escapes.
Including Kenmare, (Irish An Neidín, meaning “little nest”) one of County Kerry’s most enchanting destinations.

Unlike many Irish towns that evolved organically, Kenmare was formally established in 1670 by Sir William Petty, a prominent land surveyor and economist. Petty developed the town as part of his wider estate projects following the Cromwellian period, laying out streets and plots in an orderly design that still shapes Kenmare today.

The area itself, however, has a far deeper past. Archaeological remains across the surrounding landscape — including stone circles, ring forts, and ancient field systems — indicate continuous settlement stretching back thousands of years. One of the most notable sites is the Kenmare Stone Circle, a Bronze Age monument reflecting the region’s prehistoric significance. (Definitely worth a visit, it’s magical!)🪨✨

Today, Kenmare is recognised for its preserved architectural character, cultural heritage, and role as a gateway to the Ring of Kerry, Beara Peninsula, and the wider southwest region.

Biddy hat maker Timmy O’ Shea of Glencar, Co. Kerry. Pictured in his traditional irish cottage making hats leading up to St. Brigids day - notice how the open fire is fuelled 🪵

About the ‘Biddy’:
The ‘Biddy’ is believed to have originated from the ancient Celtic celebration known as Imbolc/Imbolg. This took place in between the winter solstice and the Spring Equinox (February 1st) and represented the first day of Spring.
When Christianity arrived in Ireland, this day was also celebrated as the feast day of St. Brigid, after Irelands only female Patroness Saint.

A Biddy group consists men and women dressed in white, wearing straw overalls and the iconic hats Timmy is seen making.
They also carry with them a ‘Brídeóg’ (a doll of Brigid), this was to ward off evil spirits and ensure prosperity for the coming year. 🍀

The Biddys parade around the community, visiting rural and public houses where they sing, play music and typically preform the traditional Irish brush dance.

A visit from the Biddys is considered good luck!

Portrait of a Biddy

Usually when you’re behind the camera you end up having no photos of yourself, so last week I finally sat down to take some headshots 📸

I thought it only fitting to model the straw biddy hat I made last year at one of many wonderfully engaging workshops held for

Already having a hat for this year’s celebration, I decided I would document the process of making hats instead.
I’ll be sharing some photos later in the week of an evening spent by the open fire with the well known Timmy O’ Shea from Glencar, making the hats in preparation for the parade.

Stay tuned!🎞️

I hope everyone is feeling refreshed after the bank holiday!
