Through Her Lens

This week, our Through Her Lens series shines a spotlight on Margaret Griffin, who joined Limerick Camera Club last year as a complete beginner with a camera she barely knew how to use.
Margaret's story is a wonderful reminder that photography is not just about creating great images. It's also about learning, building confidence, making friends, and enjoying the journey. In her own words, she shares the story behind a photograph that represents much more than a single image.

Over to Margaret...

As a complete beginner I joined the camera club last year to learn how to use an expensive camera my family gave me as a gift. I had it for four years and used it every Christmas for a family photo and that was it. I could turn it on, point it at something and press the button….nothing more. Not great images but they captured the moment.

As a complete Luddite the camera is like a space craft to me. But with an excellent mentor and practical discussions, sharing images and demonstrations in the club I am slowly getting it…. albeit very slowly.

I chose this photograph not for its photographic brilliance….. still much to learn….but for what it represents. It was taken on my first outing with the group. A rainy Saturday in May but we had a ball. Such a pleasure getting to know others in the group a bit more, getting tips and encouragement, lots of chat and tea and buns. The social side of the club really shone for me that day.

It also represents a second first for me being the first photo I posted to the group. While I can see the brilliance of some of the other images posted from that day compared to mine I am not the least bit intimidated but inspired.

This is a club that respects and supports the beginner while celebrating excellence when we see it. From my experience there is a place for everybody in Limerick Camera club so glad I pushed myself and joined.

Member Spotlight: Deirdre Carroll Deirdre Eileen Carroll

I'd like to introduce you to Deirdre, who has been a member of Limerick Camera Club for the past four years. In her own words, she shares the story behind her beautiful image of the River Shannon and how photography has helped her develop new skills, build confidence, and form lasting friendships through the club.

Deirdre Carroll:
The reason I chose this image of the River Shannon is because I love the river, the many different animals that live along its banks, and the fish that live in its waters. I captured this image early one morning after walking further into Arthur’s Quay Park to find the perfect viewpoint.

What I love about the picture is that it looks like a postcard that you would send abroad to someone. I love photography it gets me out of the house and gets me thinking of all the different ways of taking photos. Limerick camera club has helped me in a good way with all the skills I have learned over my 4 years with the club; I have learned how to do a light trail that I never heard of before and it gets me out of the house in the wintertime. It also helped me come out of my shell a lot because I am a shy person, so it has helped me to build more confidence. I didn’t know all the settings on my camera and the members in the club have helped me with the different settings for different styles of photography. I like listening to the other members talk about the different images they have captured and the techniques they used to take the particular image. The people in the Limerick camera club are so friendly and welcoming they will help you a lot. I have made so many friends in the club and they have helped me.

Through Her Lens.

I'd like to introduce Michelle Dempsey, one of our talented and inspiring photographers. Michelle's work reflects both creativity and heart, and her award-winning photograph of her beloved Husky, India, tells a powerful story of love, loss, and the special moments photography allows us to preserve forever.

Michelle Dempsey
My name is Michelle Dempsey, I joined Limerick Camera Club originally in 2012 after taking early retirement. Due to family circumstances I had to take a break from the club in 2013 but joined again in 2021.
I'm an elder lemon in the club proving that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks. The members of the club are very welcoming and more than willing to help new members to improve their skills. There is something for everyone in the club from beginners to seasoned photographers.
I am self-taught and my genres of interest are Newborn and Family Photography, Still Life, Dogs and Cats, Flower Photography and ICM (Intentional Camera Movement).
My favourite image to date is of my beautiful Husky India who was my faithful companion for 15 years. This image was taken in Ballyhoura which was her favourite place for an off-lead walk. It was India's End of Life Session after a diagnosis of liver cancer, and it was her last visit to her favourite spot. A balmy summer evening before sunset in Ballyhoura was the perfect setting for this very emotional photoshoot. In her final months I decided to enter this image into an international competition, and I was thrilled when it won second place.
So as India crossed over Rainbow Bridge her image was chosen to be part of a touring exhibition throughout England and Europe. The support from the club was hugely instrumental in my success with this image.
My photography journey has been a bumpy one but as the quotation say "Difficult roads lead to beautiful destinations"

Last Saturday, a group of our members enjoyed a wonderful outing to the beautiful Mount Congreve Gardens in County Waterford, organised by Seán Reidy.

They were lucky to have fantastic weather on their side, which made the day even more special. The gardens themselves provided endless inspiration, with stunning scenes around every corner – a real haven for photographers.

From vibrant blooms to peaceful woodland paths, there was no shortage of photo opportunities, and everyone came home with some truly amazing shots.

A big thank you to Seán for organising such a great day out!

In May, our Camera Club had the pleasure of visiting Terra Nova Gardens, kindly arranged by our member, Michelle Dempsey.

It was a wonderfully tranquil setting, and members spent the morning exploring the gardens, capturing beautiful flowers, fascinating insects, and the peaceful atmosphere all around us.

Take a look at this collection of images taken by the members who were lucky enough to visit. Terra Nova Gardens is a hidden gem and comes highly recommended!

Although the club is on its summer break, our members still arrange to meet up, get out with their cameras, and enjoy photographing new places together.

Off-Camera Flash Workshop at Curraghchase Forest Park with Matteo Mazza.

We may be off for the summer, but thanks to people like Matteo (.mazza.notes), we still find reasons to meet up and learn together. Matteo arrived with baby Morgan in tow and treated us to an inspiring session on using off-camera flash to create motion blur effects.

Armed with 70–200mm lenses, speedlights, and radio flash triggers mounted on tripods, we tackled a steep learning curve with plenty of variables to contend with—especially the ever-changing natural light.

By the end of the session, everyone came away with a unique image and a real sense of achievement, making all the hard work worthwhile.

End of Season & AGM – A Lovely Way to Close the Year

Wednesday night marked our final meeting of the season, and what a lovely way it was to finish.

We celebrated the achievements of our members with the presentation of medals, trophies, and cups—well done to all our winners. It was great to see so much talent recognised and appreciated across the club.

Following the awards, we held our AGM. Des opened proceedings by presenting the minutes from last year’s AGM. We then took a look back over the past year, with highlights shared by our Chairperson.

Our Competition Secretary gave an overview of the season’s competitions, along with some helpful suggestions for the coming year, while the Treasurer presented the club’s financial report.
To round off the evening, Des invited members to share their ideas and suggestions as we look ahead to the new season starting in September—always an important part of keeping our club fresh and engaging.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this such a successful and enjoyable season. We look forward to seeing you all again in September and enjoy your summer!

End of Season Night – Awards, AGM & Committee Nominations
We’re coming to the final night of the season, and we’d love to see as many members there as possible for what promises to be a lovely evening to wrap things up.

We’ll begin with our Awards Presentation, where we’ll be presenting trophies, cups, and medals to this season’s winners — a great opportunity to celebrate the talent, creativity, and dedication within the club.

Following the awards, we’ll hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM). This is your chance to have your say, share ideas, and help shape the direction of the club for the year ahead — all voices are welcome and encouraged.

As part of the AGM:
• The committee will present their end-of-year reports
• Nominations for the committee for September.

We’ll also hear a few end-of-year reflections, looking back on what has been a fantastic season of photography, learning, and connection.

Whether you’ve been with us all year or only joined recently, we’d love to have you there to celebrate, reflect, and look ahead together.

A big thank you to Cormac Byrne for judging our final competition of the season last night.

It was a fantastic evening in Mary I, with some wonderful images on display and plenty of positive and encouraging feedback throughout the night.
