Located on the fabled Cooley Peninsula, the site of some of the most spectacular battles of the legendary Cattle Raid of Cooley, known in Irish as the Táin Bó Cuailgne, or simply the Táin. A writer in 1908 described the dolmen as “the grave of some fallen chieftain from a battle in the Tain.” But local lore contributes a much more specific tale.

The story asserts that the dolmen was deposited here “by Fionn Mac Cumhaill and Para buidhe mór Mhac Seoidin,”and recounts the battle that then ensued between the two giants, one an invader from Scotland, the other the local hero. This battle resulted in the death of the foreigner, supposedly interred in the wedge grave. In fact, a 1758 report describes “several Bones of a monstrous Size they affirm to have been dug up here.”
According to the Co. Louth Ordnance Survey Letters in 1836,

Kilclooney More - “Of their origin we know nothing. They may have been monuments erected over the mighty dead; or memorials of great events that took place where they stand. But as we look on them, still standing in their silent strength, and defying all our efforts to pierce the mysteries of the long buried past, one voice we seem to hear, and it is that which cries: ‘All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the field.'”
R. Æ. Baillie, “Portnoo: A Corner in the Donegal Highlands,” 1900

The Mourne mountains provide a gorgeous backdrop to the site when viewed from the north. One of the main features of this dolmen is the largest of the support stones which is wonderfully sculptured to hold the capstone, almost as if in the palm of a hand This concavity is known as a shoulder, a distinctive feature of some of the County Down megaliths.

“Certain objects, both natural and man-made, persist as places through eons of time, outliving the patronage of particular cultures. Perhaps any large feature in the landscape creates its own world, which may expand or contract with the passing concerns of the people, but which does not completely lose its identity… How is it possible for a monument to transcend the values of a particular culture? An answer might be: a large monument…carries both general and specific import. The specific import changes in time whereas the general remains… Enduring places, of which there are very few in the world, speak to humanity.”

This classic example of a tripod portal tomb is locally known as ‘The Hag’s Chair’. It dates to c.3200 BC and was originally surrounded by a huge cairn of stones measuring 90 x 30-feet which is quite unusual. Although most of this cairn has disappeared two parallel lines of stones are still visible which clearly define the edges. The huge capstone is over nine feet long and has a notch carved into it which is similar to others found in the north of Ireland. When excavated in 1963, plain and decorated neolithic pottery was found alongside flint stones and a cist type burial. It was deemed to be such a good example that it is the only portal tomb in Northern Ireland to be re-erected. This area in south Armagh is known as ‘The Ring of Gullion’ has recently been designated as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
