Vishakandan Vellattam

In August, I made a plan to visit Kerala, to photograph Theyyam in October this year. Coincidentally, the movie that has become a global sensation, and is based on cultural practices from my native region - Udupi and coastal Karnataka, bears a few similarities with Theyyam rituals performed in Kerala.

Theyyam represents a mythological, divine, ancestral, animal, serpent or heroic character each with its distinct shape form and story of origin. People see and adore them as God. They narrate worries to the Living God, ask for a solution and offer money and other divine materials to these Theyyakkolams.

In Malayalam calendar, October 27th has immense importance in North Malabar. Many shrines and certain temples start their open ceremonies for the season to welcome their living God ‘Theyyam’.

Most of the shrines perform half make up Theyyam called ‘Vellattam’ and original full make up Theyyam will perform later during the calendar date. The Chathampalli Kshethram in Kattamballi performs the first Theyyam Kaliyattam during the season and Vishakandan Theyyam is famous here.

There are about 450 known forms of Theyyam and each cult has its own style of performances.

Just after sunrise, while the boats floated in silence, a beautiful sight spread in front of me.

Walking past the ghats one by one beginning from the Dashashwamedh Ghat, was my favourite activity during my stay in Varanasi. The walks are mostly random, aimless, and without any time constraints.

I took these long walks multiple times in the day, which was usually 5-8 Kms each time, but I loved it due to the array of interesting activities one can observe while passing these ghats.

Every ghat seemed to have its own collection of stories and purpose.

After the Himalayas, the next highest mountain in peninsular India, Anamudi peak- which translates to 'elephant face', is about 2695 m tall, situated in Eravikulam National Park in Idukki district near Munnar, Kerala.

This mountain is part of the Western Ghats and an important natural habitat for Nilgiri Tahr and several indigenous, rare species of animals and flora.

I shot this image when I travelled for a Meesapulimala trek, the second highest peak, and for witnessing the famous flower 'Neelakurinji' that blooms once every 12 years.

The picturesque location takes you into a state of bliss that is seldom experienced in our urban cities.
