Kodak cameras were the original snapshot equipment made for family use – not professional photographers. This cute view of two young girls at Madanapalle, one slim and one sturdy, was probably made between 1892 and 1900. The first Kodaks had fixed-focus lenses on a largish box, taking circular negative images on roll film that was loaded by Kodak after each processing. The camera was returned to the company, some 100 prints made and mounted on heavy cardstock, and everything got mailed back to the owner. I cropped this view to make the subjects more visible, with the photographer’s parasol seen at the bottom.
Today this area of Andhra Pradesh is known for a good climate, agriculture (especially the tomatoes), and its silk sarees, available at wholesale prices if you know where to go!
