The Verediter Flycatcher has such a vivid turquoise blue colour, aptly named after the Copper Sulphate salt which you may have seen in chemistry labs. Amidst all the greenery in mountains and valleys, this one is a bit easier to spot thanks to its bright hue.

The Lesser Fish Eagle is one stocky bird of prey. Found near forests near rivers, this raptor is quite fond of having fish for its meals.

These eagles stay perched close to a flowing stream of water, and then take off at the opportune moment to dive in the stream for their pick.

Wildlife Photography 101: Speak softly and carry a big lens 😎

The Himalayan foothills are home to some of the most elusive species in the world. Watching and photographing them while walking in such pristine habitat is quite literally a breath of fresh air.

The widespread joy on my face in this photo is all because I had just photographed a female Slaty-blue flycatcher.

My eternal fascination with nature continues from one destination to the next…

An endemic of southern India, the White-browed bulbul has a very distinct loud call, making it one of those birds which you hear first and spot later.

A little jewel from the Western Ghats, the male Crimson-backed Sunbird is a true eye catching species due to all that wonderful colour. A lot of times, the overall metallic sheen which is visible here is a hard to expose, but sometimes the light just falls at a great angle when your itchy trigger finger is on the shutter button 😄

Happy World Sparrow Day!

Our little winged friends are some of nature’s best gifts. It is always a delight to watch House Sparrows feeding in a bajra field like this one.

Some species have a beautiful bond with humans, the house sparrow is one of them. Even today in rural areas these beauties can be easily spotted, but in urban areas their sightings are much lower than the past.

Do you know that the city of Ahmedabad has a plaque dedicated to an innocent sparrow killed in a police firing?

Your proof here that the language of love transcends species 🥰

Few years ago, I saw this pair of Spotted Owlets allopreening and captured some beautiful moments.

Eastern Imperial Eagles are large winter visiting raptors to the Indian subcontinent. As residents of Europe they are a particularly vulnerable species, yet quite a regal predator which can be frequently observed in the Little Rann. The facial structure resembles the Golden Eagle quite a bit; however it has its characteristic white shoulder feathers in adult plumage which can be seen in this individual.

The bird sitting on the mound made it an interesting opportunity for another experiment in monochrome, as the bird itself is mostly black in plumage. I’m always amazed at how texture of the sand becomes much more prominent in the image simply by taking the colour away.

🪔 Shubh Dipawali🪔 May the festival of lights bring boundless joy and delight to you!

The Painted Sandgrouse has a truly charismatic plumage which helps it in blending in the sand. These fellows are quite difficult to detect, even if they are in flocks because they are quite still in their posture.

Another very interesting resident of Gujarat is the Marshall’s Iora. It usually stays in the scrubland bushes, and the best way of detecting it is by listening to its calls.

The Spotted flycatcher is one of the most well-known passage migrants. The little beauties start their journey from Europe, stop in India for a few weeks before heading to Africa for the winter. The way they catch their food is also quite interesting: They sit on a perch like this, swoop on an insect and return back to the same spot to enjoy the bounty.

Although its not exactly a rare species, I enjoy watching the Eurasian Hoopoes as they aren’t skittish in their behaviour. They have their crests up in a grand display many times which is a delight to observe.
