Hidden amidst the hills of Kaimur, Ukhargada Rock Shelter stands as one of Bihar's remarkable prehistoric treasures. Perched at an elevation of 441 metres above sea level, this ancient shelter preserves a visual record of human life spanning from the Neolithic–Chalcolithic period to the Medieval era.
Its walls reveal layers of history—early red ochre paintings beneath later additions, depicting humans, animals, hunting and warfare, geometric motifs, handprints, and scenes from everyday life. These superimposed artworks reflect the evolution of artistic expression across thousands of years, making Ukhargada a priceless archive of India's prehistoric heritage.
Though many paintings have faded with time, the shelter continues to speak of the creativity, beliefs, and resilience of our earliest ancestors. Preserving and celebrating such heritage is essential to understanding the rich cultural legacy of Bihar.
