On the occasion of India’s 77th Republic Day in 2026, the Zojila Tunnel team stands as a symbol of the nation's engineering resilience. Working in one of the world's most hostile environments, their dedication is a key highlight of modern India's infrastructure narrative.
Current Project Milestones (January 2026)
Excavation Progress: As of January 2026, the team has successfully completed 6 km of excavation from the East Portal (Minamarg) and approximately 12 km of the total 13.153 km main tunnel.
Breakthrough Target: The team is on track to achieve a major construction breakthrough by mid-2026 (specifically around April–May), marking the meeting of the two ends of Asia's longest bi-directional highway tunnel.

Recognition of Dedication
The team's hard work is especially noted for:
Defying Extreme Weather: Workers and engineers have continued operations in temperatures as low as minus 25 to minus 30 degrees centigrade, maintaining progress even through the harshest winter months.
Advanced Safety Integration: The team is implementing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) and integrating a Smart Tunnel (SCADA) system to ensure zero compromise on safety despite complex Himalayan geology.
Local Impact: The project currently employs over 1,140 workers, with a significant majority (77%) being local residents from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, contributing directly to regional economic empowerment.

Republic Day 2026 Messages for the Team
National Pride: The Zojila team embodies the 2026 Republic Day theme of "Aatmanirbhar Bharat", proving that Indian engineering can conquer the toughest geographical barriers.
Strategic Shield: Their work is recognized as a vital service to national security, as the completed tunnel will allow the Indian Army to move weaponry and essentials to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
