Earlier this week, Arrowhead, the iconic tigress of Ranthambore National Park, passed away at the age of 11 after a brave battle with bone cancer. Born into a legendary lineage, she was the daughter of tigress Krishna (T-19) and granddaughter of the famed Machhli (T-16) - one of India's most celebrated tigress.

Throughout her life, Arrowhead was a dominant presence in Ranthambore, establishing her territory around the iconic Padam Talab and Rajbagh areas, which are prime tiger habitats and popular spots for wildlife enthusiasts and tourists alike.

Her passing marks the end of an era for Ranthambore, and will be deeply felt by conservationists, photographers, and visitors who followed her journey from a cub to a powerful tigress. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, survival, and hope, embodying the spirit of our forests and inspiring continued efforts to protect India’s tigers for generations to come.

I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of her during my last trip to Ranthambore in 2021. Truly, one of the most beautiful tigress to have graced our jungles. RIP Arrowhead πŸ™

Cassowary, like the emu and ostrich, is a ratite, a large flightless bird with unusual feathers and other features that distinguish it from all other birds. A striking bird with glossy black plumage, the adult southern cassowary (pictured here) has a tall, brown casque on top of its head, a vivid blue and purple neck, long drooping red wattles and amber eyes. The purpose of the tall helmet or casque is unknown but it may indicate dominance and age, as it continues to grow throughout life.

The Aussie population of the Southern Cassowary is listed as Endangered under the Federal EPBC Act with an estimate of approximately 5,000 individuals living in Australia.

The sun had already set over the rock hills of Jawai, and it was almost dark when this little one decided to peek out of its den and give us one last glimpse before the end of day.

Made this image in extremely low light at ISO 8000 and 1/125s shutter speed.

Tigers are a keystone species and saving these apex predators means saving our forests and grassland ecosystems, and the numerous plants, animals, birds and other life that come with them.

Here's one to celebrate the 13th Internarional Tiger Day, which falls every year on 29th July.
