A morning well spent at Dorabeel.

At first glance, Dorabeel may appear to be no more than an empty waterlogged patch of land. But spend a morning here and you start to get what it is really all about: a thriving little haven for biodiversity, especially birds.

This wetland is home to resident breeders and seasonal visitors so it’s an incredibly important habitat right on our doorstep. And the star today was definitely the Yellow-wattled Lapwing, a species seldom seen in this part of the country.

As I watched and photographed these birds in the still morning light a thought kept recurring. Will Dorabeel continue to exist in its splendor for years to come or will it too succumb to the long arm of development?

Dorabeel and places like it may look like mere dots on a map, but they are anything but that for the birds and other life they hold.

Some wetlands don’t need a monument. They just need to be allowed to stay.

Caught just before it sheds its breeding plumage for the year. Those delicate plumes, elegant stance make this often-overlooked bird quite a stunner.

This Sand Lark was busy digging into the sand, looking for food in the river bank. Nature’s quiet stories are often unfolding right beneath our feet—we just need to pause and pay attention.

Winter migration has officially begun—and they’re already here..!

The first visitors of the season have arrived in the outskirts of Guwahati—the White Wagtail, with these being 1st-winter immature individuals.

I know… it’s not winter yet for us. But for these little travellers, the journey has already begun.

Rarer than a tiger!

With fewer than 1,000 individuals estimated to remain in the wild globally, the Finn’s Weaver is among India’s most threatened birds—and one of the rarest birds I have had the privilege of photographing.

The grasslands of Manas Tiger Reserve support this remarkable species, along with many other globally threatened wildlife. Protecting these grasslands is not just about conserving a habitat—it may be their only hope for survival.

Grotesque, prehistoric-looking, unapologetically strange — and yet, somehow, incredibly elegant in flight.

The Greater Adjutant (Hargila) has a beauty that doesn’t conform to the usual standards. There’s something mesmerizing about those enormous wings, awkward proportions and effortless grace once it takes to the sky.

After long, it feels good to be behind the lens with the Hargilas once more.!

Those tiny “tears” you may see in an elephant calf’s eyes aren’t necessarily tears of sadness. What looks like a tear can be natural eye fluid from the Harderian gland, which helps lubricate the eye, clear away dust and keep the eye moist—an important adaptation for life in dusty forests and grasslands.

The Whiskered Terns enjoying a successful breeding season in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary this year and its adjoining wetlands. Thriving bird populations are among the strongest indicators of healthy wetlands—ecosystems that deserve our continued protection and conservation.
