One of those photographs which are close to my heart and which has fetched me a fair share of acclaim. Learnt this morning that the photograph had been awarded an Honourable Mention in the One-Shot:Movement theme at the Int’l Photography Awards 2020.

The image was made on the way back from Hut Bay in Little Andaman to Port Blair in March 2018. A three-hour effort under the burning sun on the scorching open deck of MV Kalighat could make this image possible.

Found that I had not shared this image on this page earlier. So here I am. Do enjoy. All comments welcome.

Giant Leatherback turtle nesting.

Watching these gentle creatures of the deep come ashore, choose a spot, lay eggs, cover the spot, and return back to the deep over a period of ninety minutes on a full-moon night was a learning experience unlike any other.

About two metres from the head to the end of the carapace, these giants are the largest of the four species of sea-turtles which use the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as their nesting grounds.

For the last fifteen days, I was in Campbell Bay in the Great Nicobar Island. Official work had taken me to this southernmost island of India, but what an experience it was ! It is an island as remote as it could be. Have been to Little Andaman, even Car Nicobar, but this short stint in this southernmost of all Indian islands did add to some of the most unique experiences of my life. Met a host of people, heard new stories, was privy to a different way of life, saw unique endemic birds and gave company on a full-moon night to the giant leatherbacks laying eggs on the shores of Galathea !

The New Year 2019 came in between, and far removed from the conveniences of a modern life I had no choice but to wait to convey my greetings and best wishes to that world lying out there !

I reached Port Blair this afternoon, and now from the comfort of a one-roomed place I call home, I write this short post to wish all my well-wishers a very HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
And yes, this is the very first sunrise of the New Year as I saw it from the B.Quarry beach on the southernmost island of India !

Have a wonderful new year, all of you !
