Can you spot the difference? ♂ vs ♀

This is India’s SECOND LARGEST butterfly - the Southern Birdwing (Troides minos), State Butterfly of Karnataka and an endemic jewel of the Western Ghats.

🔍 Sexual Dimorphism Explained:
MALE: Jet black forewings with thin white stripes, BRIGHT clean yellow hindwing with NO spots, smaller & faster.
FEMALE: Broader forewings with heavy white veining, yellow hindwing with BOLD black spot chain - full hindwing pattern visible in Slide 3, largest wingspan 140-190mm.

MALE Southern Birdwing - Clean yellow hindwing, no black spots. This is why males look brighter in flight.

Purple-rumped Sunbird • Female (Leptocoma zeylonica) sipping nectar from Pagoda Flower (Clerodendrum paniculatum) in Kankavli, Konkan.

Did you know? Females are olive-yellow, males are glossy purple-maroon. She visits this same plant 5-6 times a day!

Monsoon is when Kankavli gardens come alive.
