Live the moment

Capturing a moment or being in it; it’s a good dilemma to be in; really. Do we even consciously choose one? We capture a moment to revisit it and cherish another by being in it, to completely live it and have it etched in our memory forever. Both help us tie ourselves to the moment forever; I’ll be fine with either of them. Live each one of them entirely, for you’d never live it again.

Connections beyond words

I was done for the day after a long walk through the alleys of Pushkar and had rested at a local café that catered to the foreign travellers who throng Pushkar in large numbers during the world-famous Camel Fair. While I was waiting for my order, I witnessed a tender moment unfolding.

A bejewelled tourist in a funky tee was drawn to this young boy. He was completely absorbed in something he found fascinating on the tourist’s mobile phone. Their conversation was broken and laboured at times. Yet it proved that age, language or sensibilities are never barriers to forming a human connection. It all depends on how open you are to connecting with others.

Unscripted Glances

Attracting attention unintentionally is often part of the process. Candid portraiture has a curious relationship between the camera and the person being photographed. There is usually a fleeting moment of awareness when the person in front of the camera wears a look filled with intrigue, curiosity and unspoken questions, as if searching for the purpose of the entire exercise. More often than not, these photographs are stripped of performance, revealing plain unguarded faces. Yet it is precisely in that simplicity that the real person beneath the surface is revealed.

No Formula for Joy

Countless industries tirelessly strive to define the standards of human happiness, promising to nurture joy, confidence, and self-belief within us. Yet, the vivacious elderly woman I met at the Pushkar Mela effortlessly challenges every such notion. Her unfiltered laughter and genuine happiness remind us that true contentment neither follows a formula nor conforms to any standard; it simply exists.

Their Finest Selves

The grace with which these ladies agreed to pose for a portrait was even more beautiful than what their attire and persona exuded. Coming to the Pushkar Fair must have meant being the best versions of themselves; picking their best saris and donning the peculiarly designed nose rings that, surprisingly, they all had in common.

Whispering Eyes

The silence of a glance is fluent in every language. There is no language as eloquent as the language of the eyes. Humanity has woven countless tongues and yet none speaks with the quiet truth of a single glance. The sheer abundance of such soulful glances makes Pushkar one of the richest places to experience through a lens.

Deepened Devotion

Another corner in Pushkar where tranquility was deepened by the quiet connection between scripture and reader. The elderly gemstone shop owner seemed far less concerned with waiting for his next customer than with immersing himself in the pages of the Ramayana.

In Quiet Devotion

It was not a quaint corner in the true sense. A small platform next to the stairs led down to a ghat at Pushkar Lake. It was only a few decibels quieter than the vibrant market facing the corner. The old guy perched on the platform was engrossed in filling the long, folded pages of his very thick notebook. The fountain pen bled blue carving divine words in beautifully fine calligraphy. I dared to intrude with a very polite request to click a few pictures. His assent came not as a word or a glance but as a nonchalant nod that didn’t take him out of his zone where no one but he stayed with his intent and his love for his beloved God.

‘Darshan’ of Raghu Rai

What would happen if a departed person were to attend his own remembrance meeting – let’s think hypothetically if they really did – would they be in sheer awe and surprise to see people congregating in such large numbers to remember and celebrate the person? I guess they would but not Raghu Rai, who was celebrated and reminisced with such fondness by his family, friends, colleagues, and students at Chinmaya Mission in Delhi yesterday. Raghu Rai always knew the kind of adulation and respect he commanded from people within his fraternity and beyond. He had the ‘gift of seeing,’ and he could always see the love and adoration people around him had for him. He has now risen much higher to have a better, top-down panoramic view of the world that looks up to him, now and forever, seeking light and guidance from the genius of photography who paralleled ‘seeing through the viewfinder’ with ‘darshan’.

Apart from the other notable persons, not to be missed were Rini Simon, who anchored the event with her mellifluous and ever-so-familiar voice, and the legendary author William Dalrymple.

Losing Raghu Rai sir feels like losing someone close, someone who seemed to see your work even without you ever having any reach to him. Legends like Raghu Rai always influence your work, as you remain conscious that the same craft you are in was pursued and mastered by legends like him with an unmatched passion and heart.

I didn’t know him personally, nor had I ever met him in person but for a fleeting moment when he graciously agreed to be in the same frame, gifting me an unforgettable memory of meeting a hero who stood taller than anyone else in his craft.

I was the lucky one, and our hero will always be Raghu Rai, a towering figure so prominent that his presence is impossible to miss for anyone even remotely involved in photography, as I am.

A special thanks once again to Parthiv of GP Pro Store for giving me the wonderful opportunity to meet Raghu Sir in August 2024, in all his humility, humour and photographic wisdom, which shall stay with me forever.
