Life in the Sundarbans moves to a rhythm older than clocks — the rhythm of the tides

These boats, resting quietly on the muddy banks, are not stranded. They are simply waiting.
Waiting for the river to rise.
When the tide returns, they will float again — engines coughing to life, carrying people through the labyrinth of creeks and mangrove forests that shape this extraordinary landscape.
Here, the tide decides everything: when you travel, when you fish, when you return home. Life bends gently to the pulse of the water.
As Amitav Ghosh so beautifully captured in The Hungry Tide, the Sundarbans are a place where land and water are never quite fixed — where the rivers rise, fall, and reshape the world twice each day.
And so the boats wait… grounded between land and water, until the tide turns again

While most people spend their drive through the Tala zone glued to the high grass, I always find my way back here to Shesh Shaiya. There’s a specific kind of stillness in this clearing that feels heavy with time.
Carved from a single sandstone reef in the 10th Century, this 35-foot Vishnu has been reclining here for a millennium. He’s the guardian of the Charan Ganga—the river that literally begins at his feet and keeps this entire forest alive.
But if you look up at the cliffs behind him, you see the real ghost of the park: Bandhavgarh Fort. Legend says Lord Rama gifted this "Brother’s Fort" to Lakshmana to keep watch over Lanka. For centuries, the Baghel Kings ruled from those heights, overlooking a kingdom of tigers. They only abandoned the fort about a hundred years ago, leaving the jungle to reclaim the stone.
Now, the tigers patrol the old ramparts and drink from the same ancient reservoirs. It’s a humbling reminder that in the end, the forest always wins the long game.

A single plume of Kans grass catching the Guggukham light.

Kans grass (Saccharum spontaneum) is everywhere in the hills, but every now and then the light hits it just right and it turns into something worth pausing for. No drama — just a quiet moment in Guggukham, noticing how beautifully ordinary things can look.

It feels less like a storm and more like a cosmic conversation. Perhaps it's Indra, the god of thunder, reminding the earth below of powers unseen yet deeply felt. As the crow flies I am 5 minutes from the Ganga In this sacred city even the skies seem to speak in Sanskrit.

*Morning Notes from Sundar Nursery*
Delhi’s historic garden is humming with life. Thanks to a decade of thoughtful restoration, the once-neglected space now flourishes as a living heritage park—where Mughal-era structures blend seamlessly with thriving native ecosystems. From restored water channels to carefully curated planting, the nursery is a model for how conservation and culture can coexist.

This time of year, the park is alive with birdsong. Every corner echoes with the rich melody of the Magpie Robin, the bubbling call of the Koel, and the playful chatter of Rose-ringed Parakeets. Overhead, Indian Grey Hornbills glide from tree to tree, their silhouettes unmistakable against the dappled canopy.

And in the water? A quieter, more tender drama unfolds. Indian Spot-billed Ducks, like the one in this frame, usher their ducklings across the gentle weirs. Nearby, Little Grebes dive in and out of sight—tiny, restless balls of energy with chicks in tow.

Dragonflies skim the surface in flashes of iridescent blue, and butterflies flit across flowering shrubs, adding colour to the breeze.

It’s nesting season in the city’s green heart—and what a joy it is to walk among so much wild, everyday beauty.

I am deeply honored and humbled to accept this award. It is truly a privilege to be recognized among such an inspiring community of conservationists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.

This award is not just a reflection of my efforts, but a testament to the power of collaboration and shared passion. From the incredible team at delhibird to the countless birders, photographers, and conservationists I've had the pleasure to work with, this journey has been enriched by the dedication of many.

I want to thank Zeiss India for this incredible honour and for their commitment to celebrating efforts that contribute to our natural world. It is heartening to see such recognition being given to causes that are close to my heart—bird conservation and connecting people with nature.

This recognition inspires me to continue working toward a future where biodiversity is celebrated, valued, and preserved. It also reminds me of the immense potential we have as individuals and communities to bring about change.

To everyone here, thank you for being part of this journey. Let us continue to cherish, protect, and advocate for the wonders of the natural world.

Where have you seen these stunning birds? Share your flamingo encounters in the comments!

The Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) is the tallest and most widespread of its kind. With delicate pink hues, striking yellow eyes, and their signature curved bill, they truly stand out in the wild.

Their vibrant coloration comes from carotenoid pigments found in their diet of algae and crustaceans. This close-up captures not just their beauty but also their incredible resilience, thriving in the harshest saline and alkaline environments.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: A journey through Marble, Light, and Legacy

For a travel enthusiast, few places rival the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. By day, its pristine white marble exudes purity; at sunset, it glows with golden light, offering a celestial experience.

A masterpiece of Islamic architecture, it features Persian, Mughal, and Moorish influences. Inside, you’ll find the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, Swarovski crystal chandeliers, and breathtaking marble floral inlays. The reflective pools amplify its beauty, especially under moonlit skies.

A guided tour is a must to fully grasp its cultural and historical depth, shaped by Sheikh Zayed’s vision of unity and peace. This is more than a landmark—it’s an unforgettable journey.

Caught in a quiet moment, this White-spotted Fantail (Rhipidura albogularis) shows a different side to its usual lively nature. Its graceful stillness is a contrast to the fidgety activity it’s known for.

An important part of wetland ecosystems, the White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus) is a busy little bird you’ll often spot darting along the water’s edge. Though it’s a capable swimmer, it prefers striding quickly along the shore, always foraging for insects, fish, and plants.
