Parliament witnessed another stormy session on Monday, with Opposition parties renewing their protest over police action against demonstrators at the July 20 Jantar Mantar protest. Both Houses were adjourned within minutes of proceedings resuming at 11 AM.

Speaker Om Birla reprimanded the Opposition MPs who were protesting with placards in their hands.

The disruption comes even as the Union government had scheduled the introduction of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha. Union Minister Jitendra Singh was expected to table the Bill in the Lower House, to be followed by a vote and passage.

Speaker Om Birla reprimanded the leaders inside Lok Sabha as ruckus ensued during Question Hour. ‘I tried yesterday and I’m trying today too. We are ready to discuss and the government is ready to discuss,’ said Birla.

‘You don’t want the parliament to function? You don’t want to discuss the issues? I request the members to return after Question Hour and according to the rules I will let the members discuss,’ said Birla and the House was adjourned.

Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav spoke out in the Lok Sabha, condemning the assault on students and women protestors. “You’ll tear the clothes of women protestors?” slammed Yadav.

Kiren Rijiju, Parliamentary Affairs Minister agreed for a discussion and requested for allotment of time for the same.

The House was adjourned till 2 pm.

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of police brutality against students and protesters who joined in solidarity. Kharge expressed his disappointment. However within 39 seconds, Kharge was interrupted and the House was adjourned amid ruckus on his statement in the Upper House.
