“When your lucky bird looks straight into your eyes… you know it’s a moment worth remembering.” 🦉✨

My lucky bird — the Spotted Owlet — gave me one of those unforgettable looks. Sitting calmly, it turned towards me and watched with an attitude that made the moment feel almost like a little conversation between two curious souls. 👀🤎

There’s something special about meeting the same bird again and again. Every sighting feels different, but this one… that look says it all. 📸🌿

Spotted Owlet — my little lucky charm. 🦉🍀

🦩 BIRD BYTE #009 | SPOT-BILLED PELICAN

Ever wondered what that enormous bill is really for? 👀

The Spot-billed Pelican may look slow and heavy, but its bill is an incredibly useful fishing tool.

🎣 The bill works like a fishing net
Its large bill has a flexible throat pouch that helps it scoop up fish and other aquatic prey from the water.

💧 But it doesn't store fish there
The pouch is mainly used to scoop and hold the catch temporarily. Water can drain away before the bird swallows its food.

👀 Look closely at the bill
The dark spots near the tip of the bill are one of the features that give this pelican its name.

Despite its massive size, the Spot-billed Pelican is an excellent swimmer and spends much of its time around lakes, wetlands and other waterbodies.

A giant bill… with a surprisingly clever design! 🐟

📝 FIELD NOTE #007

One leg up… but why? 🦅

While travelling along Sivanthipatti Road, Tirunelveli, I noticed a juvenile Shikra quietly perched on a roadside post.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then I noticed one small detail…

It was standing on just one leg.

The other leg was neatly tucked up.

My first thought was, “Could it be injured?”

But I didn't want to jump to conclusions.

Birds often tuck one leg up while resting, so a raised leg doesn't necessarily mean there is an injury or pain. From just one moment, it is impossible to know exactly why this Shikra was doing it.

And that's what I love about birding.

Sometimes, you don't get an answer immediately.

You simply notice something…
you wonder about it…
and you watch a little more carefully. 👀🐦

🪶 BIRD BYTE #007

Small bird. Striking colours. And a name that tells part of the story. 👀🐦

Meet the Tricoloured Munia—a tiny finch-like bird with a beautiful combination of black, white and chestnut on its plumage.

🔍 Bird Byte

The Tricoloured Munia is usually found in grasslands, scrub, agricultural areas and wetlands, particularly where grasses and other seed-bearing plants are available.

🐦 Two fascinating facts

✅ Its diet consists mainly of grass seeds and other small seeds, making grassy habitats especially important for this little bird.
✅ Tricoloured Munias are often seen in small groups, moving through grasses and feeding together. Their small size and habit of staying low among vegetation can make them surprisingly easy to miss.

👀 Next time you see one...

Don't just look for large and colourful birds.
Look closely at the grass, seed heads and low vegetation.

Sometimes, the tiniest birds are hiding right in front of us. 🌾🐦
