Dedicated to his memory.
Franco Basaglia (1924–1980), an Italian psychiatrist, was the principal architect of the reform that led to the closure of asylums in Italy. At the psychiatric hospitals of Gorizia and Trieste, he denounced the dehumanization produced by the asylum institution itself — bodies restrained, identities erased, lives reduced to nameless presences — and initiated its dismantling, restoring patients' dignity and open, livable spaces.
His work led, in 1978, to Law 180, the first in the world to mandate the closure of asylums on a national scale, establishing a new model of humane, community-based psychiatric care.
