Jeroen is an award-winning Belgian photographer based in Iceland. The past years, he dedicated his photography to the Central Highlands & volcanic eruptions. Most recently, he received international attention for his work at the Fagradalsfjall volcano.

Tomorrow I will finally be heading back to East Greenland for a week of photography off-grid. There I will be leading a photography expedition in Scoresbysund aboard Ocean Sherpa · Your Sailing Basecamp. The magic of this place is not easily overstated. Sailing in one of the most remote areas of Greenland, and perhaps the world, it is easy to be inspired by the castle-sized icebergs and 2 kilometer tall mountain peaks. I look forward to meeting a fresh group of workshop participants and even more to what we will be able to experience together in this mind-blowing location.

Yesterday evening I wrapped up my last Aerials of the Icelandic Highlands drone photography workshop. Throughout the summer, I met a whole bunch of great & enthusiastic people eager to learn more about how to create compelling drone photographs in one of my favourite areas of Iceland, and perhaps even the world. It was a real pleasure and honor to see everyone grow their confidence flying a drone, as well as leveling up their drone photography. As you can imagine, the conditions we were met with were just as varied as the otherworldly landscapes that hide themselves away in these remote places. I hope you enjoy these few images I have managed to edit already. Over the next weeks I have loads more images to share with you from the Icelandic Highlands.

It's no secret I like a good bit of atmosphere (and clouds!) in my photography - especially in a location such as the Icelandic Highlands. For some reason, I never really enjoyed blue skies in otherworldly places like it. Its barrenness and volcanic look demand a good bit of atmosphere in my opinion. What do you think? Are you into blue skies or prefer moody conditions?

I know I don’t very often post horizontal images on here (believe it or not but I do take those as well!) but this image was too special to not share it as intended. 🌈🌈

Reading the weather forecast in Iceland can be challenging, especially in a place like the Highlands of Iceland where the weather can be just as unpredictable as it is localised. One evening last week, I set out with one of my workshop groups to photograph sunset. However, it quickly became clear that reality was not quite matching up with the forecast. The clouds had unexpectedly sunk in where we were planning to shoot. That meant I had to improvise by finding a different place to shoot, with potential to get good light. After analysing all the weather charts and cross-referencing different models, we drove to a potentially good spot. The weather was dreary and moody but there was a chance we would get great light when the sun would finally drop underneath the low clouds. After scouting some compositions, the sun finally appeared low enough to start side-lighting the landscape. And that is exactly when the most magical thing happened: a double upside-down rainbow appeared in the drizzle, while the sun highlighted the few things that stuck out of the desolate, sandy landscape. Pure magic! 🪄

I know World Photography Day was yesterday, but I celebrated it by being outside shooting whilst wrapping up another photography workshop in the Icelandic Highlands so I’m doing the reflecting today instead.

I’ve been professionally doing photography for well over a decade now and making a selection of only 20 images has become incredibly hard. “Kill your darlings” is not something I am particularly good at😂 Here are 20 images that struck a chord with me whilst making this selection for World Photography Day. A few are from the last couple of weeks, some are years old but what connects them is that I remember the moment I captured them very vividly. To me, that is what photography is primarily about: experiencing things, experiencing the amazingness of our planet and our nature. Waiting for that perfect moment and the excitement that brings for me is what drives me to continue doing what I do. That is what it is about.

And while I primarily shoot for myself, and as an excuse to experience those moments, I can’t ignore the support I get while doing it. Some of you simply leave a quick like or write a comment. Others have sent me messages about images that felt ordinary to me and clearly weren’t to you. You perhaps even have some of my work hanging on your walls in your homes or have my book on your shelf. Some of you I had the pleasure of actually meeting in person. You stood next to me in the windiest conditions, with an obligatory touch of horizontal rain, waiting for light that never showed up, or shouted in excitement together when the light exploded above us. It has been great to experience all of that together, with your support. And that’s the part I’m grateful for. Thank you!

A throwback to a lovely, yet dusty, late Spring evening in the Icelandic Highlands. While this year the area didn't open until late June and even early July for some places, these were taken at the end of May last year. Quite possibly the earliest I have ever been in that area without it being winter. I have driven past these curves and patterns many times before and they have fascinated me for a long time. That evening, I felt inspired to capture them for once.

Iceland is not just a paradise for photographers who enjoy capturing incredible and vast landscapes but also for those who focus on more minimal and intimate scenes, focusing on beautiful abstracts and details. A few photographs from a recent workshop in Disko Bay. Snowfall under the midnight sun & dozens of humpback bubble net feedings in five days. West Greenland delivered as usual! 🇬🇱

All of these were captured in Disko Bay during my recent West Greenland photo workshop. If you haven't seen bubble net feeding before: a group of humpbacks dives together, blows a spiralling net of bubbles to trap the fish inside it, then comes up through the middle with their mouths wide open. Watching that from above never got old 🐋

It's been quiet on here for a while, but for good reason! I've been out teaching on back-to-back workshops for almost two months and editing ended up at the very bottom of the priority list these days. Now that I finally have a few days at home, here is some newer work. Already looking forward to going back with new groups next year!

One year ago today, the ground opened at Sundhnúkagígar for what turned out to be the last time… at least so far. I remember that early morning really well. I had just woken up to leave the country for a week's holiday, discovering a new eruption had begun unexpectedly about 5 minutes before. On the way to the airport, I drove past a fissure that wasn't even half an hour old and I treated it like… well, like another morning in Iceland😅 A week later I came home and it was still going. In the days that followed, I dedicated most of my time to capturing as many images as I could and I was fortunate enough to capture some of my favourite photographs I've ever taken: the steam clouds drifting and folding around the erupting crater. We are now almost a full year of quiet since then and I still can't quite believe it. After watching this peninsula go up again and again, a year of not seeing any lava at all feels like the strange part, not the seemingly endless series of eruptions themselves. Who knows what will happen next there! 🌋
