We still have few weeks left of potentially visible aurora here in Iceland. The moon is getting brighter though and the weather is also absolutely crazy lately!
A couple of nights ago here in the Skaftafell area we had a window of clear sky with very promising forecast in the geomagnetic activity.
Having been inspired by the amazing climbing pictures with aurora taken by I decided to try to get something out that night!
After asking around to some friends only the crazy enough Saulle accepted to join the mission!
All the glacier guides (including myself 😅) are very tired these days because of high season, long days of work and terrible weather. So the idea of spending the night on a glacier attempting a potentially unsuccessful photography mission is not that attractive to many! 😅
Being only two of us I had to take care also of building the anchor, lower Saulle in the crevasse and secure her before running to my camera! The aurora come out at the right time for few minutes before disappearing in the clouds.
We have been super lucky!

This year the winter in Iceland has been pretty special.
We had a lot of ‘warm’ days with rain and strong winds.
These conditions are the worse for ice caves unfortunately.
These caves pictures were taken at the beginning of the winter in two different features. The person in the pictures is myself 😀
One of the caves is now completely gone and the other one has changed massively and it’s on the way to be impossible to explore anymore.
At the present time, unfortunately, here in Iceland there aren’t spectacular ice caves easy to reach anywhere around the whole Vatnajokull glacier.

From the previous summer!
The highlands of Iceland are absolutely beautiful and unique. It’s still possible over there to experience some intimate connection with nature, especially at sunset or sunrise when there are very few people around.
These photos where taken during photo tours that I have guided for
