Back in 2018, I was still working on some photo projects alongside the first natural history filming assignments.
Here some of the shots part of a long reportage for Nat Geo Italy about poaching and the Gran Paradiso NP rangers. Also a publication for Natura the State Forestry dept. magazine.

For three years I was embedded with the anti-poaching teams of the State Forestry dept., Committee Against Bird Slaughter, ENPA and WWF Italy to document their activities across the country.
The idea was to produce a web documentary, an online platform which could have last forever with more interactive media, videos, interviews. But unfortunately the project didn't find the right support/funding/people.

Nowadays, the plague of poaching got even worst especially in the last two years with the disease of right and far-right governments which secure part of their votes from the hunting and arms lobbies.
Poachers feels more protected and the laws have been always very soft, in some occasions it's ok for them to pay a ridiculous fine.

But this is only the surface, I think the situation is worst. Many poisoned or shot animals disappear, others die in remote corners of a forest so it is difficult to gather a complete arrey of data.

I'm really curious to see the numbers of the two Italian Brown bear populations (Abruzzo, central Italy and Trentino in the north) when the census will be released.

Some behind the scene shots from the sequence I've worked on for Europe: One Continent Five Worlds.

A six part tv series produced by German company that showcases the most remote habitats of Europe, but also some human oriented environments where animals are thriving such as the Barbellino dam in the Orobian Alps, Italy.
Ibex here have learnt to use the dam as a feeding spot, where they find the saltpeter leaking from the steep wall of the dam. A mineral that supplements their usually green diet.

The Ibex of the Orobian Alps have been reintroduced with individuals coming from the Gran Paradiso National Park, a population which preserve the highest DNA standards of Ibex in the Alps.

The series is now available on German, Austrian tvs and touring wildlife film festivals.
Thanks to the production team at Light and Shadow and to the stuff members of Rifugio Curò

A cow carcass is always a good resource for large carnivores. After a few days unspotted, this cow died while giving birth, became a feeding spot for several wolves and bears.
Depending on the region and food availability the Brown bear can shift towards a more proteic diet or stick to its usual vegetarian diet. This time of the season when the cherries are almost over, a dead carcass is an important food item - at least for a while - to avoid human food conditioning (bears coming closer to villages to feed on abandoned food near houses, bins, gardens, and agricultural fields).
In the second picture the bear claw marks climbing a tree trunk.

This book and his genius author is simply inspiring. It is a journey through nature's and landscape sounds, a deep investigation from a musician perspective. (You can find research on nature's sounds on fragmentofexctinction.org)

As a wildlife filmmaker I found it very helpful to listen and understand the dimension, movements and space of sounds.
I was recently filming from a hide just outside a beech forest and could hear the animals moving around me. Some of their interactions too but mostly footsteps.
In this specific case I was trying to anticipate the movements in the beech forest by using dead leaves on the ground and twigs breaking as marking spots.
To isolate the direction, thus anticipate the framing of an animal coming out of the forest isn't easy because sounds in the wood reverberate a lot.
But I could easily tell the delicate jumps of wolves, three of them that emerged from tge forest, very shy as usual as they studied the open plain outside the forest before finally popping out. Or the very distinctive male Brown bear walk and breath, moving in the beech wood like a truck crashing everything under its weight.
In this scenario leaves and twigs were very important helpers to isolate a species and try to anticipate their next move.
In the end the shoot went pretty well!

I don't know if it's related to climate change but when I explored these mountains and woodlands I never caught this annoying Trumbicula thing which on Wikipedia say it's known as chiggers, red bugs, scrubs-itch mites. They're indeed a pain...I'll try a friend's solution for tomorrow Apple vinegar.

Tagliamento King of the Alpine rivers is finally ready to be watched in the world.
It premieres Tuesday November 12 on Universum ORF2, ZDF and Arte at 20.15.

It's fantastic to see the incredible work, passion and efforts condensed in a hour show.
I was responsible for the behavioral sequences, drone cinematography and hyperlapses of the Alpine region, woodland and wetlands.

Some shots and interactions that I loved didn't make it to the final cut, but It's definitely a must watch for tomorrow night.

Thanks to the fantastic team , Bucciarelli, and to our scientific guru, local guide, great friend Favalli

Val Saisera and Montasio's Plain, wonders that I discovered during my latest docunentary project about the Tagliamento river for Universum.
Still, I feel we only scratched the surface of this unique natural mosaic.

Thanks to the filming friends/colleagues , it was great sharing location days and cold fingers with you!!!
Thanks to the production team for the support and trust, we made this film (now in the edit) happen
