After plenty of long flights with kids, these are the things I always recommend keeping in their backpacks, not just in your carry-on. On a full flight, you may be asked to gate-check your roller bag, so anything you really need should stay with you!
🎒 WHAT TO PACK IN THEIR BACKPACK:
🧥 Sweater or hoodie: Planes can get surprisingly cold!
👕 Full change of clothes: Spills, sickness and accidents happen, even with older kids.
👚 A spare shirt for YOU: Because somehow their mess always ends up on us too. 😂
🍿 Lots of snacks: Pack more than you think you’ll need in case of delays. A few special treats they don’t normally get can help too!
💧 Empty reusable water bottle: Fill it after security.
🎧 Wired headphones: Don’t assume the airline will provide them, and Bluetooth may not work with the seatback entertainment system.
📱 Downloaded movies, shows & games: Download everything BEFORE you leave home. Don’t rely on airplane Wi-Fi.
🔋 Portable charger + charging cables: Because you don’t want a dead iPad halfway across the Atlantic. 😅
🃏 Non-screen entertainment: Cards, activity books, drawing supplies or a small new toy.
🍬 Gum or chewy candy: If age-appropriate, it can help with ear pressure during takeoff and landing.
🧻 Wipes + tissues: You will use them. 😂
🤢 Sickness supplies: Keep an airsickness bag and wipes somewhere you can grab FAST.
🛍️ Ziploc/plastic bags: Perfect for wet or dirty clothes, garbage, leftover snacks or unexpected messes.
💊 Important medications: NEVER put medication you may need during your trip in checked luggage.
🧸 Comfort item: A small blanket, neck pillow or favourite stuffed animal can make an overnight flight much easier.
⭐ MY BIGGEST TIP: Pack each backpack as though it’s the only bag you’ll have access to on the plane. If your roller bags get gate-checked, you’ll still have everything you need!
💾 SAVE this for your next family trip!
