Old Biddy on a Bike Glad to have your company.

Happily retired and taking time to cycle, walk, have mini adventures and travel the world slowly on a pension and writing my diary/blog to read in my later years.

Perugia. This is the Altarpiece of Santa Maria dei Fossi by Pinturicchio, 1496.
The detail is incredible even though no one would be close enough to see it. This little angel in the top left corner has every eyelash and eyebrow hair individually painted. Fabulous

Next stop Perugia. This is a phenomenal place to visit and is dripping with history from every pore. Well worth a visit just to see the maze of city streets formerly buried underground and hear the stories of revenge for daring to cross the Papal States. But there is so much more. Fabulous art gallery, magnificent cathedral, colourful backstreets to wander for hours in and a perfect place to just sit with a glass of Prosecco watching the world go by.

Gubbio. But on a much quieter day. We did the Aquaduct walk and I couldn’t resist a trip up in the Gubbio cages to the church but more importantly to the bar with another perfect view. The rain held off until we were in the bus in the way home.

The unique town of Gubbio today and it’s a relief to have some clouds and not full hot sunshine. My weather forecast said it would be a pleasant day and that was just right. This is the town which celebrates their special day with a Ceri procession. Every town here has its own story, myth or saint to celebrate in some way. As the vast majority of people who live here were born here it is a real passion challenge involving all the locals. Basically they run as fast as possible to get these huge wooden candle sticks (about 300 kilo each!) up the mountain to St Ubaldo’s Church. It shouldn’t be a race as there isn’t enough space to overtake but there is enough space for it to fall over and land on participants, as it did this year. This isn’t my video as it happened two weeks before we visited but it gives you a flavour of the madness.

A day in Arezzo, Tuscany. Just a few photos as there are many others in here from previous visits. I definitely will come back here on my own as there is so much I haven’t seen yet. Just the usual Pierro Della Francesca in the stunning Baglioni Chapel. Then on to Anghiari to one of the loveliest bars I know. Prosecco time. Getting in the late 20° and I am melting a bit.

The day after Republic Day we wandered round Città di Castello and saw why I keep returning there. It has such a quiet small town feel with hardly any tourists and you constantly hear locals greeting each other in the streets.

I got to celebrate Italy’s Republic Day in Città di Castello. After the successful practice run in the afternoon I knew there was going to be an event on, but I never imagined I would be standing in the pouring rain in a large local crowd, watching a couple of firefighters abseiling from the top of an earthquake damaged mediaeval tower during a lightning storm unfurling a giant flag followed by various opera performances from little bedrooms around the Square A night to remember.

First stop Bologna but then on to the beautiful small city of Città di Castello, the Umbrian base for the first week. It is not a big tourist destination and most visitors are traveling through, sometimes on foot as part of the Way of St Francis. It has a wonderful sense of a small town community where it feels safe to wander alone even in the evenings. Three or more generations of families are around, walking and eating together and it can go from empty streets to buzzing busy outside restaurants in a few hours. The first day was Republic day so the entertainment in the afternoon was watching the firefighters practice their technique of unfurling a flag while abseiling down a medieval tower closed to the public since the last earthquake. Welcome to Italy. But what about that weather forecast…
