A moment for the Whooper Swans of Lake Kussharo.
These graceful beauties were resting in the shallows beside the Kotan Onsen in Eastern Hokkaido.
So special to watch them with the steam drifting over their feathers as the last light of the day illuminated the landscape 💛

The LYS Arts Auction is now live, and it’s an honour to have three items included alongside some of Australia’s most talented artists, photographers, and creatives, in support of vanquishing cancer.

Founded by Samuel Johnson , whose steadfast commitment to raising awareness has been at the heart of the organisation, Love Your Sister has raised over $22 million over the years to support Australia’s leading medical researchers and clinicians. Their work is helping to advance precision cancer treatments, improve access to emerging techniques, and strengthen the data and collaboration needed to support patients across the country.

Visual art and the natural world have an extraordinary ability to offer comfort, perspective, and moments of calm, even in the darkest of times. Whether it’s a photograph on a wall that offers a sense of escape, or time spent outdoors feeling the elements on your skin, these quiet connections can play a meaningful role in supporting wellbeing during challenging periods.

The opportunity to contribute, even in a small way, to such an important cause means a great deal to me, particularly after recent personal experiences that have highlighted just how many people are part of the journey from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. I’m honoured to support this initiative, because cancer touches far more lives than we often realise, and continued awareness, compassion, and research funding are essential.

It’s Club Meet day for and we’re focusing on ‘Shadow Play’ 📷
I’ve loved seeing the images shared by members already, so wanted to share my own set from Kyoto, when I was photographing the colours of autumn alongside , , + - I can spend hours getting lost looking through the images and reminiscing about the locations, such a special few weeks!

A special call out to who spotted the bamboo shadows at Kōdai-ji Temple (image 2), there’s always so many details to find when exploring and photographing a scene. This one kept us well and truly occupied for a while 🌿

After snowshoeing through the Shiretoko Five Lakes Trail with we came to this viewpoint overlooking the drift ice and Sea of Okhotsk.

Golden hour was draping the scene with a soft glow and these Ezo Sika Deer were in exactly the right place at the right time to capture some snow sparkles and frame them against the gorgeous winter environment of the pensinula.

I couldn’t stop photographing these graceful beauties on the shores of Lake Kussharo in Eastern Hokkaido.
Floating close to the Kotan Onsen, the steam from the heat created a whimsical scene as it wafted over the ice and Whooper Swans as they snuggled into their feathers to nap.

If you get the chance to go canoeing in Hokkaido with dogs, say yes 🛶
Floating down the Kushiro River with our guide Satoshi from and his two dogs Aki + Yuki was such a beautiful experience.
Drifting by icy river banks, listening to the gentle sounds of water trickling, and having two furry companions helping to bird watch, not only was it photogenic, but so calming and peaceful.
Paddling all year round, you can opt for a sunrise tour to experience foggy conditions, golden light and a frozen wonderland, or there are other time slots throughout the day. I’m already planning to head back in October to see the river with vibrant autumn leaves lining the shores!

On the frozen shores of Lake Kussharo, the ice made sounds we’d never heard before. Crackling, thumping, splitting, and singing as the sunlight, wind and water slowly transformed the scene.

This is a short soundscape produced with from a field recording captured as we stood in awe of the landscape. You can hear birds in the nearby trees and the constant shuffling of frozen sheets across the lakes surface with thin sections breaking up and thicker sections dripping and popping as the sun rose.

Some of the cracking was caused by the weight of the Whopper Swans waddling along, using the warmer waters from hot springs around the edge of the lake!

When you’ve had too many snacky snacks and your seat gets a little uncomfortable!

This adorable Eurasian Bullfinch was munching away on buds and seeds on the shores of Lake Kussharo, when she opted for a precarious branch, albeit determined to make the most of it before switching to a more stable perch.

One of my favourite moments from Hokkaido, we stood so still for about twenty minutes alongside another photographer and simply watched them, recording their gentle nibbles and wing flutters. Audio by 🌿
