Lee Basford spent the day photographing Paul Smith during filming in Tokyo for his 'Postcards From…' series. A city that has been a source of limitless inspiration since his first visits in the 1980s.
The series takes you off the tourist trail and guides you through some of his favourite places in the city - from Totodo Books, local antique markets, the fake plastic food suppliers in Kappabashi, Daikanyama T-Site and Mandarake in Nakano Broadway.

When I was asked by to share one of Tokyo’s ‘must do rides', shoot and ride it with friends. I wanted it to cover all the things I love about the mountains surrounding this city. Keeping to the smaller back roads as much as possible, nice climbs, a canyon with some natural water slides to cool down in. Food stops that included hand made tofu and ice cream, a 400 year old mountain café and ending at Tokyo’s oldest sake brewery—conveniently located next to the remote Sawai train station, which will take you back in to central Tokyo.

Huge thanks to fellow riders and who know much more about the mountains of Okutama than I do.

You can see the full set of photographs from the ride along with a story by myself and over at

Rapha Rides Osaka is part of the official selection for this years in New York.

The film will be screening as part of the ‘Cinematic Shorts’ series on June 15.

Made together with & the film explores the city of Osaka from a local perspective with who’s life and work merges and overlaps with indistinct lines. And grand tour photographer who explains "With the ocean to the west and mountains in the east, rides often lead me to explore the hills in-between – where a side street can unlock a small adventure to share with friends. For me, discovering Osaka has no limits.” Thanks to and who were all part of this.

I’ve been working on a website to separate photography & writing from my design work (leebasford.com). It’s the first time, even for me, to see all of the work together (there are a few more projects to be added).

The shot here is from an early project documenting Kamo Katsuya in the days leading up to his major retrospective at Laforet, Tokyo ‘100 Headpieces’ for

I rarely show these photographs, taken just 3 months after the devastating tsunami of March 11th 2011 when I visited with a group of volunteers. After eight years and many visits since there’s a heaviness in looking at these images with the loss of more than 15,000 lives in an area still rebuilding but largely forgotten by so many now.

While the number of displaced has dropped from its peak of 470,000, about 52,000 people have yet to return to their hometowns and radiation is still an issue rarely spoken about. Even buying vegetables, fish or other produce in Tokyo we need to be acutely aware of their origins now that the Fukushima and surrounding areas are back in production, especially with a small child more susceptible to their harmful effects even though we’re told they’re safe.

The next installment from the Japanese archive stories currently being updated over at rapha.cc – I spent time trying to keep up with Paul Smith when he visited the Tokyo Clubhouse for a book signing of his Cycling Scrapbook and took time with RCC members midway through a city ride based on his favourite locations in the city, a meandering route that would take the group of riders from the Clubhouse through the high-fashion district of Harajuku, passing Yoyogi Park and Kenzo Tange's iconic National Gymnasium, on to the quieter, riverside streets of Nakameguro where he often explores the small stores and restaurants.

"The queues began forming outside Rapha Tokyo in the early hours of Saturday morning, many traveling hundreds of miles across the country for the rare opportunity to meet the celebrated designer, who's lifelong passion for the sport of cycling was recently immortalised in ‘Paul Smith’s Cycling Scrapbook’.”

More from the Japanese archive stories currently being updated over at rapha.cc – My first road trip with Rapha Japan was ‘Ride for Kumamoto’ with the mobile clubhouse. There was little sleep, a lot of riding and even more driving, over 10 days across Japan, connecting with fellow cyclists & collecting donations in 9 cities over 15 rides we were able to make a significant donation of ¥1,280,181 to help benefit an area of Kumamoto seriously effected by the 2016 earthquake.
