お盆とは？
⁡
お盆は、祖先の霊を供養する日本の伝統行事で、地域によって行う時期が異なります。新暦の7月15日を中心に行うところ、一か月遅れの8月13日から16日に行うところ、そして旧暦で行うところの三つがあります。
⁡
日本にはもともと先祖の霊をまつる習慣があり、そこに仏教の行事「盂蘭盆会（うらぼんえ）」が合わさって今の形になりました。盂蘭盆会は、お釈迦様の弟子・目連（もくれん）が亡き母を地獄から救うために供養を行い、その母が極楽に行けたという故事に由来します。

お盆には、迎え火を焚いて祖先の霊を迎え、僧侶にお経をあげてもらい、最後に送り火で霊を見送ります。かつては供え物を川に流す「精霊流し」が盛んでしたが、今では灯籠を川に浮かべて流す「灯籠流し」として各地で続けられています。

Obon
⁡
Obon is a traditional Japanese event to honor the spirits of ancestors, and the time it is held differs by region. Some areas observe it on July 15 according to the modern calendar, others from August 13 to 16, and some still follow the old lunar calendar.
⁡
In Japan, people had long practiced ancestor rituals before Buddhism arrived. Later, the Buddhist event called Urabon-ewas added, creating the present form of Obon. The origin of Urabon-e comes from a story about Mokuren, a disciple of the Buddha. To save his deceased mother who was suffering in hell, he performed offerings to many monks, and through this act, she was able to reach paradise.

During Obon, people light welcoming fires (mukaebi) to invite ancestral spirits, listen to sutras chanted by monks, and then light sending-off fires (okuribi) to bid the spirits farewell. In the past, offerings were often floated down rivers or the sea as shōryō-nagashi, but today the custom is often continued as tōrō-nagashi, in which candle-lit lanterns are set afloat on rivers.

“高円寺の阿波踊り“

昭和32年8月、高円寺パル商店街に青年部が誕生しました。
その記念行事として「新しい祭りを」と議論が始まります。
⁡
当時すでに、隣町の阿佐ヶ谷では七夕祭りが人気を集め、商店街も大きなにぎわいを見せていました。
「阿佐ヶ谷に負けてはならない」と、高円寺の人々は一致団結します。
⁡
しかし神輿は高価で無理、狭い通りでは盆踊りのやぐらも建てられません。
行き詰まったところで、ある人のひと言が流れを変えました。
⁡
「徳島には、道を練り歩きながら踊る“阿波踊り”があるらしい」
⁡
この一言がきっかけとなり、今日まで続く「高円寺阿波踊り」が生まれました。

Koenji Awa Odori
⁡
In August 1957, the Youth Association of the Koenji Pal Shopping Street was founded.
To celebrate its beginning, the members discussed creating a new festival.
⁡
At that time, the neighboring town of Asagaya was already attracting crowds with its Tanabata Festival.
Determined not to be outdone, the people of Koenji came together.
⁡
However, a portable shrine was too expensive, and the narrow streets left no space for a bon-odori stage.
Just as ideas ran dry, one remark changed everything:

“In Tokushima, there is a dance called Awa Odori, where people parade through the streets while dancing.”
⁡
That single suggestion became the spark that gave birth to the Koenji Awa Odori, which continues to this day.

土用の丑の日
土用とは、季節の変わり目を表す昔の暦の区分です。
⁡
春は木、夏は火、秋は金、冬は水にあてはめられ、残った「土」が季節の終わり18日間を示します。
特に立秋前の土用は、一年で最も暑い時期とされました。
⁡
丑の日とは、十二支を日付に当てはめた時に「丑」に当たる日。
この土用の期間に「丑の日」が重なるのが「土用の丑の日」です。
⁡
昔から「う」のつく食べ物を食べると夏負けしないといわれ、うり、梅干し、そして特に「うなぎ」が人気でした。
⁡
とりわけ、うなぎを食べる習慣は江戸時代の蘭学者・平賀源内がうなぎ屋に頼まれて、「明日土用丑の日」という紙を書き、宣伝したのがきっかけといわれています。

Doyo no Ushi no Hi (Day of the Ox in midsummer)
⁡
“Doyo” is an old calendar term that marks the change of seasons.
Spring was linked to wood, summer to fire, autumn to metal, and winter to water.
The remaining element, earth, came to represent the last 18 days of each season.
The doyo before autumn was considered the hottest time of the year.
The “Day of the Ox” is when the zodiac sign “ox” falls on the calendar date.
When this day overlaps with the doyo period, it is called Doyo no Ushi no Hi.
Long ago, people believed that eating foods starting with the letter “u” would prevent summer fatigue—like uri (gourd), ume (pickled plum), and especially unagi (eel).
The custom of eating eel became widespread in the Edo period,
when scholar Gennai Hiraga wrote a sign saying “Tomorrow is Doyo no Ushi no Hi” for an eel shop.
This clever advertisement started the tradition that continues today.

“ほおずき市“
浅草　浅草寺

7月9日と10日、浅草寺では「四万六千日」の縁日に合わせて、夏の風物詩「ほおずき市」が開かれます。
⁡
四万六千日は、たった1日の参拝で46,000日分のご利益があるとされ、江戸時代から多くの人が訪れるようになりました。
⁡
ほおずき市は18世紀、同じ縁日に市を開いていた愛宕神社を参考に、
浅草寺でも始まったとされています。
⁡
お盆の時期と重なることもあり、
ほおずきは盆棚の飾りとしても親しまれています。

On July 9th and 10th, Sensoji Temple hosts the Hozuki Market, a traditional summer event held in conjunction with the Shiman-Rokusennichi festival.
On this special day, it is believed that one visit to the temple brings the same merit as 46,000 days of worship, attracting large crowds since the Edo period.
The Hozuki Market at Sensoji is said to have started in the 18th century, inspired by a similar market held at Atago Shrine on the same festival day.
As the event coincides with the Obon season, many people also buy hozuki plants to decorate their family altars.
