They say: A picture is worth a thousand words. Does the gear we use really matter in communicating these thousand words in a single image? In these sessions we shall learn how to tell impactful stories through the lenses of our smartphones, what free friendly editing apps to use and how to share your images on social media.

Whether you are a pro or a beginner in photography, there’s much knowledge to be shared.
Let’s get back to the basics. Patrick Wanyiri East Africa Cup

The Face of Resilience || #2022

The struggles we face as creatives can be overwhelming to the point it cripples you- physically, mentally and emotionally.

Lately I have been stuck in a rut that has me losing direction. It's hard waking up and the last thing you want to do is the one thing that gives your life meaning. It hurts; surrounded by that air of melancholy.

What do you do in such times?

Do I strategically retreat or do I persistently keep pushing through these murky waters of hopelessness?

This image of (a Fashion and Commercial Model) has a story behind it. A story of remarkable resilience.

She had just come from a nightshift from her very demanding job. Arrived at 6 or 7am bubbly with a larger than life attitude, that she amazingly maintained throughout the photoshoot; never missing a beat.

Right before we took a lunch break (having been shooting for 4 hours straight), she squats, hovering over the tall grass she stares at me with these soft but resolute eyes, giving me unrestricted access to who she is.

In retrospect, this image best defines Ms. Ayiemba, a young mum who relocated to Nairobi with big dreams for both her and her son. To her, the sky is not the limit; it is only the beginning.

PS: Image has been retouched.

#2022 • Portraits from my cousin's Uthoni

Ruracio is a solemn practice in the Kikuyu traditional culture that involves the negotiation and payment of dowry before the groom and the bride can be allowed to marry, avoiding intermarriage between certain mīhīrīga (clans). It is an important process that brings together and unites the two families.

While most young people have shied away from the tradition, it still plays a major role in settling down with your partner and starting a family.

The images capture one of the procedures where the lady is covered from head to toe with other ladies beside her and the husband to be is asked to identify his bride. If he chooses wrong, his side of the family is heavily fined until he gets it right.

Fortunately for my cousin and our family, he got it right with the first try.

2022 | Photography for me is feeling and finding the beauty in humanity of the moment, capture its essence in the best possible way and make it last as an eternal memory.

This year I launch my website with some of the work I am most proud of. The launch is a big step- not only a step back in reflection but also a step forward as I grow my skill in art & business form.
