Tragic Lightning Strike Claims Three Lives in Rumbek Town
Three girls died and another sustained injuries after being struck by lightning in the Mabor-Ngap residential area of Rumbek Town on Thursday evening.
Lakes State Police Spokesperson, Lt. Col. Elijah Mabor Makuac, confirmed that the girls were walking home during a heavy storm when the strike occurred, killing three instantly. Lt. Col. Makuac extended his condolences, urging the public to stay indoors during storms and avoid using electronic devices outdoors.
Daniel Laat, Lakes State Coordinator for the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, confirming that the deceased included female students from Land Mark Secondary School. He called on community leaders and school administrators to implement safety measures immediately.
Key Safety Measures & Recommendations
Stay away from open fields, tall trees, and overcrowded, unshielded structures during storms.
Limit Electronics Use: Do not use mobile phones or electrical gadgets outdoors while it is raining.
Install Lightning Arresters: Property owners and public institutions are advised to equip tall residential and public buildings with lightning protection systems.
This tragedy follows a similar incident two months ago in Maborduang Village, Rumbek East County, where a lightning strike set a family tukul on fire, killing an SSPDF soldier and injuring two others. Community leaders continue to stress the urgency of public safety awareness as storm risks persist.

Angry Customer Dumps 4 Million SSP on Bank Floor Over Small Bills
In a dramatic protest against South Sudan’s severe currency devaluation and paper shortage, an enraged bank customer threw more than four million South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) onto the floor of a local branch after tellers issued his withdrawal entirely in 20-pound notes.
The man, who arrived expecting a manageable stack of higher-denomination bills, was handed hundreds of tightly bound bricks of low-value cash—a volume far too large to fit into the small bag he had brought with him.
Accusing the financial institution of intentional sabotage, the customer voiced his frustration at the absurdity of the situation before dumping the massive piles of cash directly onto the bank floor. Eyewitnesses watched as stacks of cash spilled across the lobby while the man blasted the bank's operational failures.
The incident highlights the growing practical challenges faced by citizens in South Sudan, where soaring inflation forces individuals to carry bulk sacks or suitcases of physical cash for basic, everyday transactions. Bank officials have not yet issued a public statement regarding the protest.
