Mombasa, the vibrant coastal city of Kenya, is home to a unique and iconic monument known as the Mombasa Tusks. These towering structures, also referred to as Mapembe ya Ndovu, Mapembeni, or Pembe za Ndovu (Swahili for "elephant tusks"), have become an integral part of the city's landscape and cultural heritage.

The Mombasa Tusks were originally constructed in 1952 by the British administration of the Colony and Protectorate of Kenya. They were erected to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the city. The initial monument consisted of two wooden structures resembling elephant tusks, which were placed over Kilindini Road (now known as Moi Avenue), leading to the Queen's residence at the Mombasa Yachting Club.

As the city's infrastructure expanded, the Mombasa Tusks underwent a transformation. In 1956, the municipal council built a new set of four aluminium tusks, two over each lane of the now two-lane Moi Avenue. This refurbishment was also prompted by the visit of Princess Margaret to the region.

Over the years, the Mombasa Tusks have been repainted several times, often by United States Marines visiting the city. The municipal government has placed restrictions on commercialization and advertisement using the monument, and the National Museums of Kenya organization charges for the commercial filming of the tusks.

The Mombasa Tusks have become more than just a monument; they have become a symbol of the city and the nation. The four aluminium tusks, which coincidentally form the shape of the letter "M" (the first letter in Mombasa), have become a popular tourist destination and a local meeting place.

In 2014, the monument was defaced with graffiti and red paint, reading "Mombasa Not 4 Ivory Export." This act was carried out by activists who aimed to bring attention to the poaching crisis and the role of the Port of Mombasa as an exit point for illegal ivory trade. The county government condemned the vandalism, but the message highlighted the importance of conservation efforts.

In 2017, the government of Mombasa County, in partnership with Mombasa Cement Ltd., once again refurbished the tusks, adding a model elephant to the center of the monument. This move underscored the continued significance of the Mombasa Tusks as a symbol of the city's history, culture, and commitment to the preservation of Kenya's natural heritage.

The Mombasa Tusks stand as a testament to the city's rich history, its connection to the British colonial past, and its evolving identity as a vibrant, modern metropolis. This iconic monument continues to captivate both locals and visitors, serving as a reminder of Kenya's enduring cultural and environmental legacy.

Nyamari Ongegu, better known by his stage name Nyashinski, is a Kenyan rapper, singer, and songwriter who has carved out a remarkable career in the country's music industry. With a diverse musical portfolio and a relentless passion for his craft, Nyashinski has become one of the most celebrated figures in Kenyan hip-hop.

Born on April 8, 1984, Nyashinski, whose full birth name was Inyatta Nyamari Ongegu, attended Nairobi School during his formative years. In 2019, he legally changed his name, dropping the first name Inyatta and opting to be known solely as Nyamari Ongegu.

Nyashinski's journey in the music industry began in the late 1990s, when he co-founded the Kenyan hip-hop trio Kleptomaniax while still a high school student. The group, which also included Roba (Robert Manyasa) and Collo (Collins Majale), released several hit songs such as "Freak It," "Maniax Anthem," "Haree," "Tuendelee," and "Swing," earning them widespread acclaim and numerous awards.

However, in 2006, Nyashinski and his family decided to relocate to Delaware, USA, where he worked as a truck driver for the next 10 years. It wasn't until 2016 that Nyashinski returned to Kenya, ready to reignite his music career.

Nyashinski's comeback was marked by the release of his hit song "Now You Know" in 2016, which immediately resonated with fans and critics alike. This was followed by the release of "Malaika" in 2017, a track that won the Mdundo Award for Most Downloaded Male Single.

But Nyashinski's crowning achievement came in 2020 with the release of his debut solo album, "Lucky You." This album showcased his versatility as an artist, spanning a range of styles from uplifting and introspective tracks to aggressive street-influenced numbers. The album's critical and commercial success cemented Nyashinski's status as one of Kenya's most innovative and talented hip-hop artists.

In 2019, Nyashinski tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, designer Zia Jepkemei Bett. The couple welcomed their first child in 2020, further cementing Nyashinski's position as a multifaceted artist and family man.
