Located in the North Western Province, Wilpattu is the largest (1317 sq. km.) and these days the most talked about wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka. The unique characteristic of the park is the presence of natural lakes or "Willus" giving it it's name "Willu-Pattu" (Land of Lakes).
Although home to several notable species of fauna and flora, Wilpattu is reknown for its population of Sri Lankan Leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya).
From 1988 to 2003, the reserve was closed during the Sri Lankan Civil War but currently about a quarter of the park's area is open to visitors.
These are a few shots taken a few months ago on a safari tour of the park. Although we looked and looked, unfortunately we couldn't spot (!) any leopards. However we did manage to capture a few other sceneries and animals. Enjoy the album!!
