Rock Frogs "ගල් පර මැඩියන්"
A small group of frogs endemic to Sri Lanka, commonly known as rock frogs. These species are typically found in and around rocky streams, shaded forested areas, and wet rock surfaces, mainly in the wet and intermediate zones. They are well adapted to life among, with flattened bodies and strong limbs that help them cling to wet rock surfaces in fast-flowing streams. Most species are nocturnal. Nannophrys species have highly restricted distributions and are considered rare and threatened due to habitat loss, stream pollution, and forest degradation. Their survival depends on the protection of clean, undisturbed stream habitats. Pic Credit © Suneth Kanishka

Platyceps josephi (Joseph’s Racer) වල් ගැරඩියා is a non-venomous, diurnal, and fast-moving snake species described in 2021 from Tamil Nadu, India. It is a small terrestrial racer, usually less than 1 m in total length, and is distinguished by prominent white transverse bands along the body and characteristic white spots on the head.

The species is an active, ground-dwelling predator that feeds primarily on small rodents. When threatened, P. josephi may flatten its head and exhibit defensive posturing that mimics a cobra; however, it is generally docile when handled or maintained in captivity.

Locally known as “Jaffna Peninsula”, P. josephi inhabits dry and open habitats that are increasingly threatened by urban expansion, agricultural conversion, and plantation development. The species is considered very rare in Sri Lanka, with extremely few records, making it of particular conservation concern. © Dineth Danushaka & Suneth kanishaka

Sri Lankan Endemic Endangered Frogs
Sri Lanka is home to an extraordinary diversity of amphibians, with over 120 documented frog species most of which are found nowhere else in the world. However, a significant number of these species are now listed as endangered or critically endangered, primarily due to habitat loss, environmental degradation, and the impacts of climate change. While some species have already become extinct, others cling to survival in small, isolated habitats.

These frogs are highly sensitive to ecological disturbances and often have extremely restricted ranges, sometimes confined to a single forest patch or stream. Major threats include deforestation, agricultural encroachment, pollution of freshwater ecosystems, and changing weather patterns. The survival of these unique amphibians depends heavily on the protection and restoration of their native habitats, particularly Sri Lanka’s rapidly vanishing rainforests and montane ecosystems.

Most of the frogs depicted in these photographs are extremely rare and challenging to observe in the wild.

Cnemaspis Species in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka Day Gecko
"දිවාචර හුනන්"
A small, diurnal gecko species endemic to Sri Lanka, typically found on rock outcrops and in forested habitats of the wet zone, as well as the rocky mountain peaks of the dry zone. It is active during the day and is often seen basking on sunlit rock surfaces or tree trunks. The gecko has a slender body covered in granular scales, with a mottled brown or grey pattern that provides excellent camouflage in its natural surroundings. It is primarily insectivorous.

To date, 40 species of Cnemaspis (day geckos) have been recorded in Sri Lanka, all of which are endemic to the island. This makes Sri Lanka a significant hotspot for Cnemaspis diversity, representing approximately 20% of the global species in this genus.

Dendrelaphis effrenis (Werner,1909)
"සිංහරාජ හාල්දණ්ඩා"
A slender, non-venomous, diurnal tree snake endemic to Sri Lanka, found in the wet zone forests of the southwest. It is a fast-moving and arboreal species, typically active during the day. Prefers dense forest, Feeds mainly on lizards, frogs, and small birds. When threatened, this snake inflates its body and intensifies its coloration to startle and deter potential predators, displaying a remarkable defensive behavior in its natural habitat.
