Grįžta jau pavasaris su visa gyvybe. Saulė šviečia, paukščiai dainuoja, samanos žaliuoja. Įspaudžiau į jas ranką ir prisiminiau, kad ir aš esu viso to dalis.

Spring is back with all its life. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the moss is green. I pressed my hand into it and remembered that I am a part of this too.

Iš savo ragų paieškų dar buvau prisirinkęs šerno kaulų. Dar pažįstama buvo anksčiau pasiprašius šonkaulių, tai kartu prigriebiau. Pusę kaulų, kuriuos matote, jau anksčiau fotkinau :)

Kaulai baisiai rudi nuo riebalų ir taninų. Nežinau kaip atsiriebaluos tokiam šaltyje, bet matysim.

I had already collected some boar bones from my antler shed hunting trips. I also remembered that a friend had asked me for some ribs earlier, so I grabbed those too. You've seen half of the bones here from my previous photos :)

The bones are terribly brown from the fat and tannins. I don’t know how they’ll degrease in this cold, but we’ll see.

Praeitą savaitgalį buvau Rygos Vagonų salėje pasiklausyti Eihwar grupės kartu su Mira Ceti, kadangi vyko pagoniškos liaudies naktys. :)

Abi grupės pasirodė nuostabiai. Eihwar kaip visados pasitiko visus adrenalino pilnomis širdimis taip, kad būgno dūžiai giliai jautėsi krūtinėje.
O Mira Ceti liko sužavėti visi, klausantis jos balso dainuojant tradicines, šventas folko dainas. Jinai sudainavo net mūsų lietuvišką Joninių sutartines (Kukal Rože Ratilio) savo stiliumi!

Last weekend, I travelled to the Vagonu Hall in Riga to see the band Eihwar perform alongside Mira Ceti, as there were pagan folk nights taking place. :)

Both groups performed wonderfully. As always, Eihwar greeted everyone with hearts full of adrenaline, even the drumbeats were felt deep in the chest.
And everyone was captivated by Mira Ceti, listening to her voice singing traditional, sacred folk songs. She even sang our Lithuanian Midsummer sutartinės (Kukal Rožė Ratilio) in her own style!

Na štai. VMVT buvo susisiekus su manimi, pasiprašė parodyti kur yra šernų gaišenos. Tada susitikome dėl mėginių paėmimo. Aš rodžiau kelią kaip koks vedlys per visus bruzgynus, o jie pasiėmė mėginius. Iš viso užfiksavom penkis šernus, buvo plane tik keturi, bet penktą aš užmačiau prie pat kanalo gulint :)

Geras jausmas prisidėti prie to, nes tokias ligas būtina fiksuoti ir kontroliuoti.

Well, there we go. The State Food and Veterinary Service contacted me and asked me to show them where the boar carcasses were. So we met up to collect the samples. I led the way through all the thickets like a guide, and they took the samples. In total, we recorded five wild boars; the plan was for only four, but I spotted the fifth one lying right next to the canal :)

It feels good to contribute to this effort, because it is essential to track and control such diseases.

Trys negyvi šernai vienoje vietoje! Buvo ir ketvirtas toliau. Kaip manot, ar tai dėl sunkios žiemos, ar nuo ligos mirė? O gal kažkas kito?

Dar įvykių iš to pačio savaitgalio, labai buvo gera laimikių dienelė.

Bevažiuojant namo pro kaimą, akies krašteliu pastebėjau kažką rudo gulinčio po apleistos sodybos langais. Galvoju, ar tik ne koks sudžiūvęs šuo? Pristabdžiau mašiną ir išlipau.

Pasirodo saulėje pakepusi stirna. Stoviu, galvoju. Mora peilį turiu. Eismo nėra, keistų žvilgsnių nebūtų. Stirnos kaukolės kolekcijoje neturiu. Ką gi, nusprendžiau pasidarbuoti!

Nusipjoviau aš tos stirnos galvą, dar visai gerai nuėmiau kailį ir odą. Nei kvapo nebuvo nei ką, visai buvo malonu dirbti. Tik oda baisiai plona prie kaukolės, tai buvo iššūkis pilnai pašalinti.

Na, galutinai aš ją susipakavau, ermitaže nusipirkau kibiriuką ir grižęs namo įmerkiau aš tą galvą į kibirą su vandeniu. Palikau maceruotis. Bus matyt kiek laiko užtruks, dar neteko dirbti su tokiu mėsgaliu.

More stories from that same weekend, it was a really good day for finds.

As I was driving home through the village, I caught a glimpse of something brown lying under the windows of an abandoned house. I wondered if it might be a dead dog. I pulled over and got out.

Turns out it was a roe deer, baked in the sun. I stood there, thinking. I had a Mora knife with me. There was no traffic, so no one would give me strange looks. I didn’t have a roe deer skull in my collection. Well, I decided to get to work!

I cut off the roe deer’s head and did a pretty good job of removing the fur and skin. There wasn’t even a hint of a smell, it was actually quite pleasant to work on. The only thing was, the skin was incredibly thin near the skull, so getting it all off was a real challenge.

Well, I finally packed it up, bought a small bucket at Ermitažas, and when I got home, I submerged the head in a bucket of water. I left it to macerate. We’ll see how long it takes; I’ve never had to work with such a large "piece of meat" before.

Superiniai šiandienos radiniai. Buvau išėjęs realiai paieškoti, ragų, kaulai būtų buvę tik bonusas. Deja, gavosi, kad kaulai gavosi visas mano laimikis. Pilna maišą parsitempiau iki mašinos :) Kažkaip jau įgudau kur tuos kaulus ieškoti, nes rasdavau per 10 min vos nuėjęs nuo mašinos.

Radau šerniuką (dar nepradygę protiniai dantys), žalčialunkį, meilės taksi, grybukų, visokių gėlyčių, plunksnų ir krūūūūva kaulų. Kaulų pilni miškai. Labai gaila, tačiau pilną kaukolę radau tik šerno. Elnių kaukolės buvo sulūžusios, tad teko pasiimti tik stuburo slankstelius. Galvoju kažką susinersiu iš jų. Pakabinsiu, atbaidyti kaimynus ;)

Today’s finds were awesome. I actually went out looking for antlers; the bones would have just been a bonus. Unfortunately, it turned out that the bones were my entire haul. I dragged a full bag back to the car :) Somehow I’ve gotten the hang of where to look for those bones, because I found them within 10 minutes of walking away from the car.

I found a baby boar (its molars hadn’t come in yet), a mezereon, a love taxi, mushrooms, all kinds of flowers, and heaps of bones. The woods were full of bones. It’s a real shame, but the only complete skull I found was a wild boar’s. The deer skulls were broken, so I had to settle for just the vertebrae. I’m thinking of making something out of them. I’ll hang it up to scare off the neighbors ;)

Na va, pagaliau ir man pavyko rasti du ragelius tą pačią dieną po kelerių metų. Va ką reiškia, miško pakeitimas.

Šviežią radau ant kelio, o senuką po eglute. Visai kaip dovanėlė man, saulei jau beveik nusileidus, miško žmona suteikė man tokią dovaną.

Well, finally, after a few years, I managed to find two antler sheds on the same day. Change of the forest means a lot.

I found the fresh one by the deer trauk, and the old one under a fir tree. It was just like a little gift for me, with the sun almost setting, the forest wife gave me this present.

Bevaikščiojant tarp miškų ieškant kaulų ir ragų, galima sutikti netikėtumų.

Kaip angis pirmoje nuotraukoje, kuri susirietė į gynybinę poziciją mane pamačius, pradėjo šnypšti, kai pasilenkiau arčiau.

Tada radau dvi skulptūras. Viena susuktą skulptūrą miške pačio medžio, o kita genių/meletų išdrožtą skulptūrą.

Žinoma pasirodė ir ypatingieji ledo plaukai prie nulinės temperatūros, paveikti tam tikro grybo. Tai įvykti reikia gana specifiškų sąlygų, šylant orams, jau nepavyks to pamatyti.

Na ir ant galo, čiurleno upelis prie bebrų užtvankos ir dar toks kelmas atrodė kaip pabaisa :)

When wandering through the woods in search of bones and antlers, you can come across some surprises.

Like the adder in the first photo, which curled up into a defensive position when it saw me, began to hiss, when I leaned in closer.

Then I found two sculptures. One was a twisted sculpture made from a tree trunk in the forest, and the other was a sculpture carved from by woodpeckers.

Of course, the unique ice hair also appeared at freezing temperatures, caused by a certain fungus. This requires quite specific conditions to occur; as the weather is warming up, you won’t be able to see it anymore.

And finally, a babbling brook by the beaver dam, and that stump looked like a monster :)

Įdomesni radiniai iš vakar. Labai įdomioje vietoje radau negyvą šerną. Atrodo, lyg jis pats sau tokią užuovėją pasistatė ir nusprendė atsigulti. Dantys atrodo seni, kai kur nulūžę, kai kurie gerai nudrožti.

Bet ir įdomiai pavyko jį rasti. Aš vaikštau pamiške ir užuodžiu tokį gyvūno kvapą. Grynai kaip zoologijos sode būna. Toks švelnus prakaito kvapas. Uostau uostau aš tą orą ir bandau suprasti iš kur tas kvapas. Ten pasuku, kitur pasuku galvą, žiūriu į tam tikrą pusę tas kvapas tik stiprėja ir stiprėja. Jau vienoje vietoje buvo toks stiprus, kad visuose pusėse jautėsi. Aš ten per 5 metrus ir radau jį taip gulintį.

Aišku, netrūko ir kitos gyvūnijos. Stirnos ganėsi su stirninais. Gervės klykavo. Žmonės ieškojo elnių ragų (nesėkmingai). Tikrai įdomesnis savaitgalis.

Some interesting finds from yesterday. I found a dead wild boar in a very interesting spot. It looks as if he built himself a little shelter and decided to lie down. His teeth looked old; some are broken, others are badly worn down.

But I found him in an interesting way. I’m walking in the woods and I catch the scent of an animal. Just like how the zoo smells. A soft, sweaty smell. I sniff the air, trying to figure out where the scent is coming from. I turn my head this way and that way, and when I look in a certain direction, the scent just gets stronger and stronger. At one spot, it was so strong that I could smell it from all sides. I walked about 5 meters and found him lying there.

Of course, there was no shortage of other wildlife either. Roe deer were grazing with the bucks. Cranes were calling. Humans were looking for deer antlers (without success). Definitely a more interesting weekend.

Kadrai iš praeito savaitgalio, beieškant kaulų ir ragų (kurių deja neaptikau), bet radau kitų grožybių.
Miškai dar pilni sniego, upeliai patvinę, gyvūnų pilna. Tai stirnos, tai elnės, tai meletos klykia, tai gervės gieda, tai ilgauodegės zylės čirena.

Nors ėjau per sniegą, vis tiek prikaupiau tiek vandens, kad teko gremžtis kojines prie mašinos. Nors eiti 2h su kiaurais batais nebuvo taip blogai, kai lauke buvo +10°C. O paskutinius 10 metrų iki mašinos, jau buvau ant tiek nusikalęs, kad tiesiog nusprendžiau bristi per kanalą su batais. 😄

Šis žygis irgi buvo naujas iššūkis naujam miškui. Dubrava mane jau paliko nusivylusį, su siautėjančiais keturračiais. Dabar tenka truputį toliau važiuoti. Bet ten tokia ramybė, kad visą tą laiką nei mašinų nei lėktuvų negirdėjau. Tobula!

Photos from the last weekend, while searching for bones and antler shed (which, unfortunately, I didn’t find), but I did find other wonders.
The forests are still covered in snow, the streams are wide, and the forest is teeming with wildlife. There's deer, here a woodcock screeches, there a crane sings, and there long-tailed tit chirps.

Even though I was walking through the snow, I still got so wet that I had to wring out my socks by the car. Though walking for 2 hours in completely drenched boots wasn’t so bad when it was +10°C outside. And for the last 10 meters to the car, I was already so soaked that I just decided to wade through the water canal with my boots on. 😄

This hike was also a new challenge in a new forest. Dubrava had already left me disappointed, with all the roaring ATVs. Now I have to drive a little further. But it’s so peaceful there that I didn’t hear a single car or plane the whole time. Perfect!
