I slowly lowered my heavy underwater camera into the water while trying to navigate the current with the paddle in my other hand. My goal was to capture the sun basking turtles on the log through an above/below image. I carefully drifted into their direction from afar and clicked the shutter before I got closer. I didn’t want the turtles to be alarmed by the trigger noise and also wanted them to be more comfortable seeing the the kayak coming towards them.
I had absolutely no idea there was two turtles below me.
It has been my dream to capture a pair under the water, showing a fraction of turtle behavior.
So when I scanned through the pictures once I came home, it was hard to believe it had finally happened - right under my nose.

Anytime I am on the water, I never bother to have expectations of the river. I let her guide me and show me the things she wants to show me that day…

We ventured out early in the morning in order to see turtles around the spring head. The sun rays hitting the surface turned the water into a kaleidoscope, a sparkling prism of light.
There isn’t much to eat for them but they are making the best of it and hopefully more protections are on their way for the historic Suwannee.

I wasn’t sure if I’d get lucky but decided to head out on the river regardless. It was a beautiful, calm morning until I spotted this family - my heart started racing…

It turned out to be an unforgettable moment with this family.

Although it might seem tempting to “swim” with them, my underwater footage is always taken while I am in my kayak, not in the water with them.
These guys look playful and curious (which they are) but it can be dangerous to swim near otters. Their sharp teeth can cause severe injuries. Besides that, their behavior would be very different if they sensed a person in the water.

What an honor to greet the morning this way. No matter how often I get to drift along the crystal blue waters and its saturated greens, the river fills my heart with wonder.
Maybe the reason why I yearn to go back over and over is because I want to assure it’s real.

🤿I am finally coming up for some air. 💦

The last few days were filled with gatherings of dear friends and family.

Being born in the middle of summer and my first word being spring, it was second nature to spend most of the time submerged in these beautiful freshwater springs.

We shared laughs and stories while Mother Nature cradled us in her arms, drenched in sunlight and rejuvenated by her sacred waters.

The biggest present arrived when we ventured to the panhandle for the day and found ourselves alone at one of my favorite springs.

Thank you to all who joined me to celebrate my birthday. May I always carry childlike wonder at any age. 🩵
