More from the morning’s shoot for the latest Bell edition feature, penned by ; some favourites beyond those that made it into the magazine. I love the way that girl is ‘breaking the fourth wall’ as it were . . . and the serene, focused boy, which felt right for black and white.

Well done to Miss Emily for creating the line of all ages . . .! Quite a challenge to get everyone facing the right way at the right moment!

Have a great weekend, everybody!

A 👋 from behind the camera ahead of this week’s portrait mornings at . This was taken by my lovely friend and local photographer Sophie Sitwell Photography.

A few parents have asked how the sessions work, so I’m just sharing a little more about my approach.

The mornings are designed to feel relaxed and natural, with the aim to capture a sense of play and movement rather than formal, school-style portraits. I’ll usually spend a little time walking around with each child first, letting them settle and explore naturally.

The Gallery will include a small set of images to select from, both in black and white and colour (and available as digitals and / or prints).

Delighted to see so many places are already booked. I’m keeping the sessions intentionally small to make sure there’s enough relaxed one-to-one time with each child.

If you’d still like to reserve a place, the booking link is in the first comment here.

More adorable moments from 2024’s portrait sessions at ✨

Next week’s sessions (13th to 15th May) will take place in this same lovely outdoor area of St Philip’s, so I can capture the children at play rather than in a formal studio set up.

If siblings attend the nursery together, I’ll also try to capture a few photographs of them together during the sessions. To ensure enough time for each child individually, please reserve a place for each child attending.

A number of places are already booked for next week, including some returning families from 2024, which has been fab to see.

If you’d still like to reserve a place, a the booking link can be found via Link In Bio.

Excited to be returning to for a series of portrait sessions on 13–15 May.
Sharing just a few moments from my last visit in 2024. I always aim to keep things completely natural and as far removed from traditional school photography as possible 😍 I’ll be working outdoors as much as I can, keeping everything relaxed and not too structured.
Because the sessions are designed to capture children at play, it’s best to register in advance to ensure your child is included with thoughtful, one-to-one attention.
If you’re a parent at the nursery, you can reserve a place via the link below A number of places are already booked, and it’s been so lovely to see some familiar names — children who have grown up a little since I last photographed them.
After the sessions, I’ll create a small, carefully edited gallery of colour and black & white images, available as digital downloads and prints.Do comment below if you have any questions 👇

All the colour 🇯🇲 🌈
All the vibes 💃🏻

These shots are some of my faves from last year’s Notting Hill Carnival. This is Izaba from Terrazen Centre in Amsterdam. - not sure what he’s smoking, but it might just be a first for The Bell 😉🚬; love this lady's headdress - and her eyes!

This was my third year returning to Carnival, with just my 50mm lens (it’s such a beauty, showing so much detail and luminosity). The 50 encourages me to get close, to talk, to connect – and that exchange creates that dynamism.

I was honoured to choose this trio for the Spring edition of The Bell, alongside the wonderful work of long-time contributors Charlie Waring and Nigel Cull.

Finally, as summer events begin to fill the calendar, I’m always quietly happy to hear from anyone looking for natural, story-led photography like this. Don’t hesitate to get in touch - [email protected]

Loved spending an evening at Arundel Fire Station, capturing Richard Tout and Nick Myerscough, who are retiring after a combined 64 years of service. Wow 🤩

Another wonderful feature by Hannah Clubb for the latest edition of The Bell.

The set-up there is fascinating – the station is entirely staffed by a ‘retained’ crew. Firefighters need to live or work within four minutes of the station and be ready to drop everything when that pager goes.

See here a new recruit on his first day, trying on all his fresh kit. The team are actively looking for new members, so if you’re local – and relatively fit (!) – do step forward.

A few more moments from The Bell shoot with The Parsons Table .
What struck me was the quiet focus of the kitchen: Head Chef Jonny peeling shallots (I think 😀); Sous Chef Dave rolling out the gnocchi . . . he’s been with the restaurant for almost 10 years. Restaurant supervisor, Monica, having a giggle Liz. Think I must have been telling one of my bad jokes! Monica has the accolade of being TPT’s longest-standing member of staff. Amazing! 💙

Although it felt a little dark for the chefs (!), I turned off all the fluorescent lighting in the kitchen to just let the natural light breathe. With the strong sunlight pouring in, it created this wonderful dramatic glow across the space.

Here’s to another 10 years at TPT, with – perhaps – staff that can claim to have been with them for 20 years!

‘In hindsight it was absolutely bonkers’ - Liz Parsons on choosing to up sticks from a settled life in Canada and launch The Parsons Table with husband and chef, Lee, back in 2015.

And how glad we are that they did – and have just celebrated 10 years on Tarrant Street!

It was a pleasure to photograph the team preparing for service as part of a feature in the latest edition of The Bell, penned by Hannah Clubb. She chatted to Liz about their high culinary standards, the challenges of Covid and how to navigate food costs.

My approach was to get stuck in (and somewhat in the way, I’m sure!) of the team prepping, the careful preparation of the tables, and of course the finished plates . . . such a magical place, and Liz and Lee really DO make it what it is.

The best restaurant experiences are, I think, when you are made to feel truly welcomed . . . that sense of belonging is what it’s all about 💙

Now breathe… the sun going down over the Cabo de Gata nature reserve.

This was taken with my film camera (a Canon A1), while on a break with my family; the Nikon locked up safely at home. During those few days, I needed to shape up the raw recording of my interview with Mike, the founder of Motte & Bailey Cafe and Bakery, from around 4,000 words down to roughly 1,200. I seemed a long way from good food at the time… no croissants straight out of the oven for miles 🤣.

It struck me that the discipline I need for the writing process is actually very similar to how I approach photography. In some ways, my favourite part of a shoot is loading everything into Lightroom and cracking on with the culling. In a sense I’m shaping the narrative by removing what isn’t needed.

A couple of key points Mike made – that in France a croissant is no longer considered fresh after two hours, and that the Motte & Bailey bakery often does a second bake on the same day – weren’t even said while I was recording. They came after the microphone was off. It’s details like these that can unlock an entire piece.

My journalist mother-in-law said she liked the way the article includes a sense of ‘what next? — because readers want to know where someone is heading. Perhaps that’s true of the creative process too. You don’t always see the whole picture straight away; sometimes it only reveals itself once you step back and give it time.

This feels like the final note in a small series of posts around the Motte & Bailey Cafe feature: the work, the people, and the thinking behind it.

PS I have a few extra copies of the magazine here in Arundel. Do get in touch if you still need a copy.
