🇧🇾 BELARUS 3-city itinerary and what I found
most interesting about each of them

🇧🇾 Minsk: The capital, almost entirely rebuilt
after WWil, is a showcase of Stalinist urbanism, wide avenues, and war memorials. The Minsk Hero-City memorial complex offers a deep dive into Belarus' tragic WWIl history.

🇧🇾 Grodno: A multicultural city with Polish, Russian, and Soviet layers. Its history reflects Belarus' borderland identity - a place where Catholic, Orthodox, and Jewish communities once coexisted.

🇧🇾 Brest: Most famous for the Brest Fortress, a monumental Soviet memorial and the site of intense fighting in 1941. This city is a powerful symbol of Soviet wartime heroism

🧭 CLOSING THOUGHTS: Belarus is less about medieval charm and more about raw, unfiltered history: WWII devastation, partisan struggle, and Soviet legacy. You're walking through a country where the 20th century left deep scars, and where the past is still physically and politically present.

Gambia trip highlight: Kachikally Crocodile Pool
-
My favourite stop on the Gambian leg of the journey was by far our visit at the Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau, a short and inexpensive taxi ride away from Gambia’s capital Banjul. The area is essentially a crocodile sanctuary with tamed crocodiles fed by humans from birth. The crocodiles are rather passive and very calm. You may even, under the supervision of the local crocodile keepers, touch and pet the crocodiles. The place operates on donations, which is the basis for budget to feed the many dozens crocodile living here. Make sure you leave a small donation to feed the crocodiles after your visit! 🐊🇬🇲

Rabat, Morocco, where French colonial influences blend seamlessly with traditional Moroccan aesthetics. Now that I’ve started to explore more parts of the Africa, I’m starting to realize just how architecturally diverse this continent is, which is echoed in the fusion of indigenous designs, colonial legacies, and modern innovations. From the minimalist beauty of ancient mud mosques in Mali to the futuristic skylines of Johannesburg, the continent’s architecture tells a story of its complex history and vibrant creativity, celebrating both tradition and modernity.

Fun fact: modern-day Tétouan (specifically the old medina) was built by Andalusian Moors who fled the Reconquista in Spain. As war raged in the Iberian peninsula, they brought their know-how back into North Africa as they fled and that influence is now evident in the architecture, with similarities in layout, colours, and building materials to other Andalusian towns. The city has a rich history of destruction and reconstruction, switching hands between Phoenician, Roman, Arab, Berber, Spanish & Portuguese control over the centuries.
