Cronyism is the practice of favoring friends, relatives, or close associates—especially in hiring, promotions, or awarding contracts—regardless of their qualifications.
In simple terms:
It’s when people in power give opportunities to people they know or like, instead of those who are most capable.
Where it shows up:
Politics: A government official appoints unqualified friends to important positions
Business: A manager promotes a friend instead of a more skilled employee
Organizations: Contracts or benefits go to insiders rather than the best candidates
Why it’s a problem:
Undermines fairness and merit
Leads to inefficiency and poor performance
Can increase corruption and reduce public trust
