The shop signs of Penang tell all kinds of stories. In this shop sign installation, Ban Ban Kia tells a light and shadow visual story of shop signs coming from varying decades, styles and techniques. What can we appreciate in the past, that perhaps we can celebrate in the present and also preserve for the future?

The shop signs of Penang tell all kinds of stories. Through an exploration of one unique and accidental type of shop sign where two designs overlap, this talk looks at how the shadows of the past tell stories to the present, and how we can listen to them to shape the future.

As dusk falls, we encourage you to slow down and open your senses, before heading out on an exploration of the shop signs along Beach Street. This walk will be free-form and participative as we seek out some of the old signs and stories hiding away in plain sight.
This experience includes a short tea ritual that slowly leads to the walking exploration.

Penang has a rich heritage of hand-crafted shop signs, rooted in its history as a cultural and commercial hub. Designed to be both functional and beautiful, each shop sign is a work of art and design created by a skilled craftsman. Today, in the rush of change and development, they are fading into the shadows. Ban Ban Kia is an initiative to slow down and tell the stories hidden in these shop signs โ about the people, streets and businesses that produced them, the calligraphers and sign makers who created them, and the cultures and ways of life they come from โ before they disappear completely.
