Over the past few months, I’ve rebuilt my website to better reflect the work I do beyond Born in Malaysia.

Environmental portraits have always been at the core of my practice. Not studio cut-outs, but portraits rooted in place, identity, and story.

Over the years, I’ve photographed founders in their offices, families in their homes, business owners in the spaces they built, and individuals who simply want to be remembered as they are in this season of life.

The updated site brings all of that together more clearly.

If you have been considering a personal or corporate portrait this year, this is the direction my work continues to move in.

Safe. Human. Unintimidating. I’m Kenny Loh — portrait photographer, documentary storyteller, and creator of Born in Malaysia.

International Women’s Day · 8 March

For this year’s International Women’s Day, I’m setting aside a small number of portrait sessions for women.

Most of my time is currently spent on Born in Malaysia and ongoing commercial work, but this kind of portraiture remains important enough for me to make space for it.

Not to celebrate a role.
Not to polish an image.
But to pause and be seen as you are, in this season of your life.

Many women realise, years into their lives and careers, that they don’t have a single portrait of themselves that feels honest.
Not a profile picture.
Not a formal headshot.
But a portrait that reflects presence, not performance.

This is how I photograph women.
Quietly. Intentionally. Without asking them to be anything other than who they already are.

My work lives at kennyloh.com.

Not every family portrait is about smiles.

Some are about presence.
About how people sit together.
About what is said, and what is left unsaid.

Festive seasons like Chinese New Year and Hari Raya bring families home again. Different years, different lives, gathered briefly in the same space.

As a photographer, I am drawn to these in-between moments. Honest, unforced, quietly meaningful.

If this festive season feels like one worth remembering as it truly is, I am taking on a small number of family and individual portrait sessions during the holidays.

As the year draws to a close, I find myself thinking less about what is ahead, and more about what has endured.

Some portraits are not about a single moment, but about a lifetime of familiarity, trust, and shared history.

Before the photograph, we slow down. We allow space for conversation and presence.

The photograph is simply the trace of that exchange.

Wishing everyone a gentle close to the year, and a meaningful beginning to the next.

Before any photograph, there’s a conversation.

That part rarely gets seen — but it’s where everything begins.

Trust, comfort, and connection come long before the camera is raised.

That’s how portraits begin to feel honest.

Clement Connery came with his mother, Fatima Gnanapiragasam, and her sister, Bernadette Gnanapiragasam.

I asked him to stand just behind them; close, steady, protective.

This photograph isn’t about labels.
It’s about family.

When they decided to be photographed, the two women went the extra mile.
They had their sarees tied, their hair done, and their makeup prepared.

They had tied their own sarees for years.
But sometimes, with age, it’s easier and kinder to let someone else help.

What stayed with me wasn’t how they looked,
but the care they brought into the moment.

This is the kind of work I care about:
clear direction,
quiet attention,
and respect for the people who step in front of my camera.

Jasmine doesn’t come to be transformed into someone else.

She’s a leader, a mother, someone who has spent years carrying responsibility — often in public, often on stage.
But when she steps into my studio, there’s no performance required.

She doesn’t have to project confidence.
She doesn’t have to explain who she is.

She just has to arrive.

Most of the women who come into my studio tell me they’ve never seen themselves this way —
and the men share their own quiet versions of that too.

People feel safe enough here to admit something vulnerable about themselves.
That trust is where the real portrait begins.

This is the kind of work I’m committed to creating.

Portraits that don’t shout.
Portraits that don’t pretend.
Portraits that feel grounded, human, and true.

Thank you Beii for beautiful makeup as always

Christine has spent much of her career telling other people’s stories —
as a journalist, a communicator, and now working in a family office.

But like many professionals, she had almost no photographs that felt true to who she is today.

During our shoot, she looked at her portraits for a long moment and said quietly,
“I’ve never looked like this before.”

I hear this often.

Most of the women who come into my studio tell me they’ve never seen themselves this way —
and the men share their own quiet versions of that too.

People feel safe enough here to admit something vulnerable about themselves.
And that trust is where every real portrait begins.

This work isn’t about perfection.
It’s about presence — seeing yourself as capable, composed, and strong.

That’s the kind of portrait I want to make more of in 2026.

A portrait from my recent session with Karen, Siew Hong Puah

I’ve always loved how portrait sessions unfold — not in one perfect moment, but through a series of small shifts. A smile that appears naturally, a pause, a breath, a change in energy. Every frame reveals something different, something real.

That’s what keeps me coming back to portrait work.
The trust, the connection, and the quiet moments in between.

I’ll be sharing more from this series soon as I continue shaping my portrait direction for 2026.
Makeup by Beii — thank you for the beautiful work.

Nadya channels the timeless spirit of the 1950s with a style all her own. From her perfectly sculpted hair and classic makeup to the unmistakable charm of her glasses and vintage-inspired wardrobe, every detail speaks of her love for the era. It takes real commitment, especially when it comes to the artistry of her hair.

I had the privilege of photographing Nadya for my upcoming book, Born in Malaysia, which will be published in December 2025. Behind the scenes, she was every bit as gracious, vibrant, and full of life as the era she brings to life.

Thank you, Nadya, for keeping the beauty of the past alive and letting me capture it.
