For the Sa’ban, the forest is more than a landscape.

It is a source of food, materials, knowledge and everyday life, a place that has long been part of how the community lives and understands the world around them.

Look a little closer, and the forest has many stories to tell.

🌿 Do you love nature, knowledge of herbs and the stories it holds? There’s a whole world to discover in Long Banga. Find out more on Malaysia Day at Hin Bus Depot, Penang.

Among the Sa’ban, women carry distinctive ancient tattoos that set them apart, even among other Orang Ulu communities.

Traditionally made on the arms and legs of married women, these markings are connected to family, womanhood and an older Sa’ban way of life.

Some stories are written in words. Others are written on the skin. 🖋️

🤩 Curious about the meaning behind Sa’ban tattoos? Come discover their story with the Sa’ban representatives at Hin Bus Depot, Penang on Malaysia Day!

Far from the busy streets and familiar city landscapes lies Long Banga, a remote settlement in the highlands of Sarawak, surrounded by forests, rivers and mountains.

For the Sa’ban, this is more than a dot on a map.

It is where families grow, stories are passed down, and everyday life unfolds alongside the land.

🗺️ Love going where the road less travelled leads? Find out how you can take the journey to Long Banga on Malaysia Day at Hin Bus Depot, Penang!

🇲🇾 This Malaysia Day, come meet a community you may have never heard of.

CANVAS ART, with the support of Hin Bus Depot, warmly invites you to an intimate evening with the Sa’ban community from Sarawak.

✨ SA’BAN OF SARAWAK
Malaysia Day Special Screening and Q&A

Who are the Sa’ban?

One of Sarawak’s smallest Indigenous Orang Ulu communities, with only around 2,000 people across Malaysia — yet carrying stories, traditions, language and a cultural heritage that deserve to be seen, heard, and remembered.

Through two short films, we hope to bring you a little closer to their world.

And this time, the stories won’t just be on screen.

You’ll have the chance to meet Sa’ban community representatives, hear from them directly, ask questions, and connect with others who care about the many cultures that make Malaysia what it is. ❤️

Come curious. Come listen. Come celebrate Malaysia with us.

High in the highlands, the Kelabit way of life carries stories of language, survival, and tradition. This documentary reveals a culture shaped by their history, memory, and identity.

Despite their many successes, the Kelabit community still faces numerous challenges, including the potential extinction of their language, as fewer young people are able to speak it. They also face a decline in knowledge of traditional survival skills and cultural practices.

Grateful to Canvas Art for organising, The Rojak Projek for capturing every moment, and Yayasan Gamuda for supporting this journey. Most of all, thank you to the wonderful communities who welcomed us and shared their stories—you made this experience unforgettable.
