Step 1: Stop recording in empty rooms. Sound bounces off hard walls and creates echo and reverb you don't want.

Step 2: The cheapest acoustic treatment: record inside a wardrobe/closet surrounded by hanging clothes. Clothes absorb sound. This is 100% free.

Step 3: If no closet, hang heavy blankets or duvets on the walls around where you record. Even better, build a reflection filter from blankets over a curved frame.

Step 4: Get your microphone AWAY from walls. Position it at least 1 metre from any wall.

Step 5: Use a pop filter (you can make one from a wire hanger and stocking). This removes harsh ""P"" and ""B"" sounds.

Step 6: Record at the right distance from your mic — 6 to 8 inches is standard. Too close = boomy bass. Too far = room noise.

Step 7: Turn off fans, AC, and close windows before every recording session.

Step 8: Test your recording by recording a clap — listen back and count the echoes. More than 1? You need more treatment.

Step 9: In your DAW, use a noise gate plugin on your vocal channel to cut background noise automatically.

Step 10: The minimum affordable home studio setup: USB mic (Audio-Technica AT2020 = ~$99), audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett Solo = ~$120), closed-back headphones (Sony MDR-7506 = ~$99). Total: under $320.

💡 Good recordings come from treated spaces, not expensive microphones. Fix your room first.
