INTENSE COURT SCENE
Nathalie stood up to honour the court and the judge, and Frank was in the witness box.. "In the beginning, I thought I was working with a very generous man, he provided me with all I needed: food, shelter, clothing, but you know what they say about the d3vil? When he gives you everything you need, he always wants something in return, something money cannot buy," Frank began.
"Witness, in this context, can you please tell us who the d3vil is?" Nathalie Nwosu probed.
"Objection, my Lord, the prosecutor's question is leading, and I take exemption to calling the defendant a d3vil; the presumption of innocence is still in his favour, my lord," Miss Craig objected, addressing the Judge. Nathalie sat down.
"Objection sustained, please rephrase your question, counsel," the judge pleaded.
"As the court please, apologies, your lordship, Mr. Frank, can you please identify who the man is? Chief Durosanya?" Lawyer Natalie asked, standing up.
"That's the man, that is the man that has been t0rmenting me, that is the man that has been responsible for taking awa„ the peace and rest of my family," Frank noted.
"Frank, but you said the man was good to you and your family," Natalie asked.
"Yes," Frank admits.
"Are you telling the court that his benevolence came with a price?" Natalie asked.
"Yes," Frank replied.
"Can you expatiate on that?" Natalie requested.
"I was his personal assistant; my eyes have seen things that are too difficult to imagine. I've seen young ladies walk into Chief Durosanya's house and never c0me out aliv3," Frank revealed.
"Why is that?" Natalie asked.
"Because he's a cāltist and a ritāalist; he kills them all. They're some sort of price for his fame," said Frank, pointing accusingly at Chief Durosanya.
"Mr. Frank, can you provide any incident or evidence that supports your statement - Chief Durosanya's involvement in cālt activities and women's explā
itation for his own gains?" Nathalie asked.
"Chief Durosanya is responsible for the d3ath of Nike, Mr. Gbade's daughter; I witnessed everything. He used her as a saĀ¢rifice for his gr33d, power, riches, and fame. I may nā
t be able to get my peace back, but at least I might get my conscience," Frank revealed.
"You said the defendant, Chief Durosanya, ki11ed Nike, Mr. Gbade's daughter?" Natalie probed.
"Yes," Frank replied.
"Can you tell the court how that happened?" Nathalie interrogated.
"They met at the club; he invited her to his private lounge, and after a few rounds of drinks, he took her away, and that was the last that we heard of her. The next time we saw her, she was d3ad, slaāghtered like an animal. This man is a ritāalist and a ki113r. He is not supposed to go scot-free; he's supposed to pay for everything he's done. Justice must prevail!" Frank narrated, palpitating, and his emotions were all over the place.
"Counsel! Please advise your witness to remain calm and composed," the judge demanded.
"As the court pleases," everyone chorused.
"Frank, I need you to be calm," Natalie told Frank.
"How can I be calm? Do you know what this man has put my family through? The emotional tā
rment and tā
rture, all because I worked for the wrong person? Why do I have to pay for his sins? Why?" Frank questioned.
"Counsel, emotion cannot guide his testimony; let's proceed with clear and rational responses," the judge reminded Lawyer Natalie.
"As the court pleases." Everyone chorused.
"My lord, I apologize on behalf of the witness," Lawyer Natalie said, facing the judge.
"Frank, that will be enough," she turned to face Frank.
"And that's all, my Lord, thank you." Lawyer Natalie told the judge and sits down.
"Cross-examination," the judge announced.
Lawyer Craig stood to interrogate Frank.
"Yes, my lord," Lawyer Craig took her turn to question Frank.
"Mr. Frank," Lawyer Craig started.
"Yes," Frank responded.
"How are you?" Lawyer Craig posed.
"I'm obviously not fine," Frank answered sincerely.
"And why is that?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Because of the h3ll the man put me through," Frank confessed.
"Which man?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Chief Durosanya," Frank replied.
"Oh! You mean the man that sponsored your daughter's education?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Yes," Frank admits.
"The man that paid your rent in one of the most decent places in the estate?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"It depends on your definition of decent," Frank reluctantly replied.
"How many bedrooms?" Lawyer Craig questioned.
"Excuse me!" Frank was shocked.
"How many bedrooms is your apartment, Mr. Frank?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Objection, my Lord, the question is irr3levant," Lawyer Nathalie intercepted.
"Objection overruled, please answer the question," the judge said.
"As the court pleases," said Lawyer Natalie and sits down.
"It's a four-bedroom apartment," Frank replied.
"Four-bedroom apartment?" Lawyer Craig reiterated.
"Yes," Frank confirmed.
"What luxurious h3ll you've been through; I can imagine the tā
rture of deciding which room to sleep in or how to spend the money since your boss literally pays for everything. Oh, what h3ll you've been through," Lawyer Craig affirmed, smiling slyly.
"I obj3ct to that comment, my Lord. I cannot understand why learned counsel will make such comments," Lawyer Natalie rose to coānter Lawyer Craig.
"Objection sustained, please ask direct questions," the judge advised.
"As the court pleases," everyone chorused.
"So, just to clarify, Mr. Frank, Chief Durosanya paid both your house rent and your daughter's school fees, and these expenses were not deducted from your wages, correct?" Lawyer Craig interrogated.
"All with bl00d money," Frank said, throwing his face the other way.
"Yes or no? Please answer the question," Lawyer Craig laughed before asking.
"Yes," Frank replied.
"How long did you benefit from Chief Durosanya's benevolence, answer the question, Mr. Frank?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"One year, two years?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Ten years!" Frank spilled.
"Hmmm... Hmmmm... Come again?" Lawyer Craig laughed before asking.
"Ten years," Frank affirmed.
"You enjoyed his supposed bl00d money for ten years, Mr. Frank," Lawyer Craig asked.
"I worked with him for ten years," Frank defended.
"On the day Miss Nike was ki113d, were you in the same room with Chief Durosanya?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"No!" Frank answered.
"What w3apon did Chief Durosanya use to k331Miss Nike?"
"I don't know," Frank replied.
"Was it a gān, a kĻife?" Lawyer Craig probed further.
"I wasn't there," Frank retorted.
"Face the court, Mr. Frank! Was it a gān or a kn|fe?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"I don't know; I was not in the room," Frank revealed.
"So, you were not physically present when Chief Durosanya k33ld Miss Nike?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"I... I wasn't in the room with him, but we all know, it was common knowledge that Chief Durosanya k33ld her," Frank admitted.
"Mr. Frank, three years ago, Chief Durosanya was pā
isoned. A pā
ison that led him to coma for three years. Now that was h3ll! Not in a four-bedroom apartment, Mr. Frank," Lawyer Craig revealed.
People in the court started laughing.
"Silence, please," the jury said, demanding decorum in the court.
"My simple question to you, Mr. Frank, who pā
isoned the cup of tea Chief Durosanya drank?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Can I... Can I get a cup of water, please?" Frank requested.
"Mr. Frank, answer my question," Lawyer Craig demanded.
"Can I... I don't feel so good..." Frank pleaded.
"Not until you tell us who gave him the cup of pā
1$oned tea," Lawyer Craig insisted.
"Can I... I don't feel so good," Frank said, touching his stomach, pretending to be pressed.
"Mr. Frank, answer the question," Lawyer Craig probed.
"My Lord, I humbly apply that my witness be given a chair to sit because I can see he's getting weak," Lawyer Natalie suggested to the judge.
"A chair? What for?" I can see that the young man is not getting weak; he's a very young man; he doesn't need a chair, so request denied," the judge said with an air of finality.
"Witness, who gave Chief Durosanya the cup of tea?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"I did," Frank finally admitted.
"Who made it?" Lawyer Craig asked again.
"I did," Frank admitted again.
"You made the cup of tea that landed Chief Durosanya in a cā
ma for three years. I put it to you that you pā
isoned your boss," Lawyer Craig asked.
"I don't feel so good," Frank said.
"You'll be fine after answering this simple question," Lawyer Craig assured.
"I did not want to do it; they made me do it," Frank confessed.
"Who? Mr. Frank, face the court," Lawyer Craig said.
"You did not want to do it, but you did it?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"Please answer the question," Lawyer Craig demanded.
"You pā
1$oned your boss three years ago?" Lawyer Craig asked.
"I... They made me do it," Frank confessed.
"Who?" Lawyer Craig asked.
Frank couldn't answer but fainted.
